So from what they say the 6s were Chevy 230 motors. They list the two as having different compression ratios so my guess is the differences were in the head and cam much like the 8s. And of course the carburetor, but that doesn't have a being on CR. So I'm thinking chamber size and maybe head gasket thickness. So essentially you could probably take a base OHC 6 and turn it into a sprint motor by decking the head or block or both and changing cams. You'd still have to add the 4bbl. Sound feasible? Was there sprint badging on the motor itself?
According to the Rotella book (I really like the details in it about the 1st Gens), it was different than the Chevy 230. Although many "bolt-on components were interchangeable" Pontiac was, however, its own design......"
If you want to build a Sprint there are a lot of those engines lying around. There is a guy from Southern Alberta that specializes in them. He's on this forum but I cannot remember his name just now. I'm sure he could line you up with one.
For info on the OHC6 jump over to https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/sohcsix/ . Sprint engine has a number of differences as compared to the regular OHC6. The '66 & '67 were 230 cu in while the '68 & '69 were 250 cu in. Also the Sprint Head is a whole different animal than the regular head. The main thing they have in common is that they are totally unique as compared to the Chevy 6. About the only items that work with both ( Chevy & Pontiac ) are the carb, alternator and power steering unit, even the starter is different. Were a small group over at SOHCSIX, but have loads of info on the OHC6. Jump over & take a look & we will point you in the right direction. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.
If one of the OHC6 knowledgeable people at that Forum know how to submit changes to Wikipedia, I noticed that it says, "The 1967 base model Firebird came equipped with the Chevrolet 230 cu in (3.8 L) SOHC inline-six." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontiac_Firebird
I've seen that on a couple of sites. I just figured it was true( if it's on the internet it must be true right?). It wouldn't be unheard of. Years ago I pull an original sbc out of a Canadian built Pontiac. Now that I think about it I think it was a 67 at that. Anyway it seems that it's not the case with the OHC 6s. Seems they are Pontiac bred and built. Almost too bad. If it was a Chevy brand it would only cost 1/4 $$$ to put it together and parts would be easy to get. Too easy. Not a chance. No love for Pontiac owner/builders. Not in the stars for us.
I think you will find that working with the OHC will be challenging and will be a whole new learning curve. It’s a cool engine, though. Something to keep you busy in retirement
No 67-69 Firebird’s were assembled in Canada. You could buy them from a Canadian dealer in Canada but they were assembled in USA. Some parts were made in Canada. For example: gas tanks and chrome bumpers were Made in Canada.
If there was a Pontiac bible written the first Chapter would be “JD and the Bansheeâ€..
Remember the 67 Banshee with the euro designed engine?
I’m not a supper fan of the OHC6 but I respect what they were trying to do. A lot of Pontiac enthusiasts love that engine. I suspect you would be impressed with torque in that little puppy. Bet it I would leave a 350 2bbl lonely at the start line!
Your right, I love it. My 68 Sprint OHC6 Peak Power comes in at 229.3 HP and 255.5 ft-lbs of torque at 4300 RPM (per Dyno test ) This was with a small 390 Holly carb on it , as my Rochester was still in the car on the other engine Not too shabby for a 6. Its just a ton of fun ! Parts are a bit of a challenge, but it's worth it for the looks you get when you open the hood at a car show.
I remember working on my 67 sprint bird. It's like Wayne said, completely different than Chevy. (OHC verses just a valve cover on top.) As I recall it even had an external oil pump by the distributor. Looked really cool to see a Q-jet on a six!
Well I'm not expecting much as far as git up and go out of a 6 but that's ok. Like most of us, I've only dealt with v8s but this is exactly what I wanted. Most of the time if I walked by a car with a 6 I probably slowed down a bit and smiled thinking it's kinda cute and a bit of an oddball. Sort of the whole mentality behind owning a Pontiac if you think about it. Gotta believe if you own a Pontiac you're not completely normal...or playing with all your marbles. That 67 that I pulled the sbc from wasn't a bird. It was one of those Paresians or a Beaumont. Something like that. I swear! I couldn't believe it. Bought it out of a wrecking yard. I'd never heard of such a thing before but it was completely stock.
If you drop a TH350 behind the OHC with a properly tuned Rochester 4Bbl you will be shocked at the way it can move off the line. Not that I am dissing the 2 speed but the TH350 is worth it. Who said any of us are "normal" & how come you got marbles ???
Yes it's true...I march to a different drummer,....But what you don't know is that I'm in a different band, in a whole different stadium !
Pontiacs don't leak oil, they are just marking their territory ! LOL
I'll bad mouth the ST-300 for you, it is not a good pairing behind the OHC. If my combo wasn't all number matching I would rip it out and put in a 4 speed.
Well we'll see when the PHS comes back if it's an original 4sp car. Would definitely make life easier for me. The guy's going to deliver it tomorrow after work. Then I can finally get my head in there and find out a few of the things that have been bugging me since I first looked at it. You guys know I'm not a big originality guy but it's kind of a challenge to see if I can make it back into what it once was. It'll be interesting talking to the original owner. I'm really looking forward to that.

Shocked to say the least! It's a disease you know.

No, I wouldn't say a great deal. Not even close but it was almost exactly what I was looking for and while I stood there looking at it, hemming and hawing about whether I really wanted to spend that much, it hit me that if I didn't buy it I would regret it for the rest of my life. I'm too old for that. So I blew the $10k on what I wanted. It's why I work 8-10 hours a day. If I can't have something I want then I may as well just lay down now. Life's short you know.
Anyway I got the PHS today and the car got delivered tonight. See the thread in R&C section.
Sorry man, poor comment on my part. I’m with you, better to buy it than regret it later. When I bought mine I did not even negociate With the seller. He eventually gave me $1500 off. I was just happy to get it.
It looks like you found a beautiful car. Good luck with her!
No worries. I know you didn't mean anything bad by it. I thought about trying to negotiate but the guy said he was firm on the price and I probably had that look on my face after I saw the options. Besides this guy apparently has waaaayy too much money. Hard to haggle when somebody doesn't need the money.

Yes I agree...That's why I have my numbers matching Sprint & ST300 on the side & am about to install the worked 69 Sprint and worked TH350. If something happens to them, it happens, no worries I can always put all the 68 numbers correct back in. Or they are there for my son when I'm gone.
You can always earn another 10k but won't find a car like that often. Less and less as time goes by I'm guessing. Great find! Good luck!
Another true statement. OHC6 are getting very hard to find. As we all know, back in the day, everyone was pulling the OHC & dropping in a big V8 so lots of engines wound up in the scrap heap. I have seen many ads that read "had an OHC in it ...." but to find one still intact is getting to be (pardon the pun ) a rare bird ! Any bird is getting hard to find. I just got off eBay and their is a listing for a bird that has a Camaro rear quarter on it and another add lists it as a Firebird Camaro clone ????? Would that be a Firmaro...or a Camabird ????
