Just when you thought you knew a few things, here's an interesting fact. I have never used a tension gauge to tighten a V-belt in my 30 years of tinkering with cars. Always went by feel, 1/2" slack plus minus. So, I got myself a Dayco tension gage along with a set of new belts. The specs for our 3 belts are ~ 140lbs. 140 LBS!!!!!!! Holy crap! I got all 3 tight as never before and the gauge only reads 50LBS, so to be correct I'd have to tighten them 3 times tighter?!?!? That can't be right, but it says so in our manual and the DAYCO website. Any thoughts?

That's the formula for wiping out alternator, water pump and p/s pump bearings.

I use the German scale "Gooten Tite"

If nothing is slipping or squeeking, that's tight enough.

Is that the torque value for the bolt?

Maybe the borroughs guage measurement scale is different?

It you believe Gates info, the belts are designed to tighten as they get hotter. So it may not be as important these days to get them tight.

Everything points to the info in the service manual being correct...
