well im sure this question has been asked before but does anyone know the firing order or happen to have a diagram showing which cylinder is which and which plug wire fron the dist goes to which plug? we just got everything put back together and rebuilt, ive got it idling but ive got small pops coming out of the exhaust so im guessing its either crosses wire or just the timing. if anyone has any second thoughts or a diagram let me know thankyou
The firing order on all Pontiac motors is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. the #1 cylinder is on the driver's side cylinder bank. The driver's side has the odd number cylinders: 1-3-5-7. The passenger side has the even numbered cylinders: 2-4-6-8. [Number's 7 and 8 are closest to the firewall.
9 should work. Set the timing with the vacuum advance disconnected and plugged at idle. Your timing light based off #1 cylinder. If there is any ping on acceleration start backing it down. I suggest you do some reading on ignition timing and curve, lots of performance and economy to be gained in tuning.
awesome thankyou so much, well i got it, now the only problem im running into, in right where the vaccum plunger is on the disti is right where my heater line out of the head is. so to get it right where i need it, the heater hose is in the way, any sugestions?
You can pull the distrib and reinstall with the gear in a new position. If you do it with the #1 piston at TDC with the valves closed then you will know approximately how to align the distributor based on the orientation of the rotor to the #1 terminal on the cap.
With the rotor at TDC on #1, put a sharpie mark on the distributor with the cap removed. Pull the distributor and reinstall. MAy take a couple of tries. The sharpie mark helps you so you don't have to fumble with the cap until you are read to button down. BTW, make sure you aren't 180 degrees out, it happens all the time.
what we are saying is you are off a tooth. Moving the disributor 1 tooth will change the position of the vacuum advance can enough to move it away from the hose.
the heater hose should be on the passenger side, the vacuum canister should point to the driver's side.
Resuscitating an old thread.
I have what seems to be the same issue as OP.
Im a little confused tho. The vacuum can should be between the heater hose and the carb? Currently, mine sit between the fire wall and the heater hose.
