My 68 Bird was an original 4 speed car and I'm going back to that. I have a nice super t10 6 groove with 3.42 1st gear, I know they are the weakest of the st10s. I also have a nice t5 world class from a 88 iroc that has had a few upgrades. My engine is a stock 75 smog era 400, which isn't a big hp engine but still makes alot of torque. At this point I can go either way and I just wanted opinions on what you would do. Street driven only, no slicks. And I'm not sell either and looking all over again for something else. These things are getting scarce. Thanks guys.

I installed a 1980' T-10 4sp from a Camaro into my 68 Firebird 350HO. It had the 3.42 first gear as well. Street raced it and quite enjoyed it.

I like the idea of the low 1st gear just for ease of driving plus you can go to a 3.08 or 2.73 rear end and cruise easy on gas. I'm sure you're 350ho is way stronger than my 400. Is yours aluminum or iron case?

I have a t-5 WC in my '69 behind a stock re-built 350. I am extremely happy with the combination. The 2.95 low gear paired up with a 3.08 rear seems perfect to me. The shifting is much smoother than the old external linkage was and feels real positive. I know the transmission is the weak link here but I seldom beat on the car and have had more than five years of fun out of it so far. I do have a spare tranny on the shelf "just in case".

Iron case I believe. I had a 2.73 as well. Kind of brutal...eventually got a 3.42 that works great.
