Trying to figure out if these are 68 seats with a headrest or did some put 69 seats in the car?

69's were typically the only ones with headrests standard. But, rumor has it, you could get the headrests as an option in 68.

You'd have to see the broadcast sheet or the PHS documentation to know for sure.

The wear and patina on the seats compared to the rest of the interior appears to be consistent...so???

My guess would be original '68 seats with headrests.
I think in the research-facts area of this site shows the differences.
Yes, PHS would tell you for certain if the car came with them.
Not many '68's came with them, so would be a cool option to have.

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure.

+2

I think they only produced 2000-6000 in 68. Very rare. The parchment color for the 69 would be different than the 68. PHS will prove it. There are stamped nos on the seat frame at the top. Take the head rest off and back cover. There will be a date code on heat rest and frame and possibly a part no.

I picked up a 68 pair with new vinyl for $150 /pair. Sometimes you get lucky!

On the 1968 price list they are code 571 and cost $52.66. That's $392 in 2020 dollars.

Thanks for all the information guys! The PHS documentation is a little confusing. On the order sheet under the head restraint column 57, the add number is only the numeral two. On my build sheet under column 57 is the number 1. I have read other posts in which people have said that the number on the order sheet and build sheet can be different (maybe based on the number of beers the guy at the plant had at lunch!) But the Head restraints, if they are original to my car make the cars build even more rare.

This has become important to me recently since I just sent the car off to start its restoration last week. If the seats are original to the car, then I'll keep them. I thought if someone had thrown in a pair of 69 seats, I could be free to upgrade them to something newer.

Thanks again for the info. I love this Forum!!!

The booklet, Accessories for your 1968 Pontiac Wide Track shows the 571 code for buckets, 572 for bench. See photo below.

The 1968 Pontiac Sales Manual price sheets shows code 571 as head restraints for $52.66 but does not list 572.

However, this list of codes was created from the "1968 Pontiac Sales Manual listing all options and accessories that were available on the Pontiac Firebird" It shows only the code 572 Head restraints.
See: https://firstgenfirebird.org/1968-info/1968-technical-information/1968-options/#564

"The Definitive Firebird Guide 1967-1969" shows only code 571 as "Head Rest Bench".

Clear as mud? I can see why the codes don't match on your car's specific documents.

If you take the headrest out of the seat the chrome post is different between 68 and 69. If I remember correctly it's the number of holes. I have a picture showing the difference I can dig up if you're still interested.
