Has anyone installed steeroids? It is supposedly bolt in DIY rack and pinion for F-body birds? the product is available at speeddirect.com - yes they say their was issues with installing in pontiacs with pontiac engines, but I emailed them and they say that has been corrected and was only an issue with the PS version for some unidentified reason. BTW - I have a 67 bird, 428, PB, but tired old standard steering
G'day skid, does the rack come with all the other parts your going to need. Look into getting the pump, mounting brackets, pulleys and hoses. Sounds like a costly conversion from arm strong steering.
Howdy Check out unisteers rack. They say no bumpsteer. It is also in the Summit catalog. It sells for $800 so it looks like it is cheaper and a cleaner install. Not sure about the clearance on a Firebird. It also comes with a lifetime warranty. www.unisteer.com
I considered adding a rack & pinion to my 69 but most of them will fit Camaros and not Firebirds. The rear steer versions output shaft hits the motor mounts on a Pontiac. The Camaro uses different motor mounts so it's not an issue. The front steer versions can be made to work with a Firebird, but you have to do quite a bit of fab work to the front cross member and you need different steering arms. So instead I went with a 92 IROC camaro quick ratio box and all new Moog steering components for a lot less money.
From what I gather, unisteer's rack is just the rack, mounting plate, and rod ends. The Steeroids system comes with hoses, fittings and a steering shaft coupler. The unisteer is supposed to eliminate the bump steer since their rinner rods pivot at the lower control arm pivot. That way the inner tie rods don't "push or pull" the wheel when the control arm pivots.
Skidmark - I emailed steeroid's tech line about 2 months ago to talk about the interference to the Pontiac motor mount and they said it was not yet fixed. When did you talk to them?
I know that washing and waxing my car with the present condtion of my paint is like polishing a turd.....but it's my turd and I want it polished!
Daryl_keys, I was talking to steeroids back in may - they said it shouldn't be a problem - but they wern't sure. The reason I waited till now, was so that I could drive the summer and do upgrades in the fall.
From the gist of the responses (thanks guys), it appears it may not be as simple a "bolt on" as advertised - hence I won't try to install it.
I think I too will keep my bird the way gm made it ;-)
