PETRONIX WAS SIMPLE AND EAZY TO INSTALL. BEEN USING WITH VERY GOOD SUCCESS FOR THE LAST FIVE PLUS YEARS AND THE SYSTEM LOOKS STOCK. I DONT KNOW MUCH ABOUT THE MSD'S SYSTEM, MAYBE SOMEONE ELSE CAN GIVE BETTER ADVISE ON IT.
ARE YOU DOING THIS CHANGE OVER JUST TO GET RID OF THE POINTS OR FOR PROFORMANCE REASONS?
IMO even with a med. build-up motor petronix works very well. i dont know about rev limiter with the petronix conversion and i believe there is a limited number of coil petronix ok for use with their stuff.
there is no rev limiter with this unit.
i think the MSD 6AL ignition has a built in rev limiter. i heard they are good also, but i have not ever used them. anyone else know?
I just put a Pertronix in and used their own "Flame Thrower" coil which was only about 30 bucks and fits in the stock bracket (made in China though) . I do not recall a limited number of coils approved for their system but can check when I get home.
Haven't struck a match to the new engine so can't tell you how I like it, but I can tell you I chose it from my research and that it could be used in a stock distributor (looking stock from the exterior).
Anyone happen to know how much voltage a stock coil puts out? A book I just bought says 40,000 volts. It also says that most V8s only use about 30,000. It says that these 40,000 volt coils that are sold with aftermaket set-ups are all marketing and not any better than a standard coil. Hmmmm...Anybody got another opinion?
"First understand that a points type ignition system in proper adjustment is totally adequate for RPM's to about 5800. The after market multi-spark ignitions may make a marginal engine start and idle better, but generally will not improve actual acceleration performance. That is providing that your stock ignition has factory or equivalent parts and that it is properly adjusted. The HEI ignition system was developed to fire a wider spark plug gap which allows the use of leaner fuel mixtures. Leaner mixtures reduce pollution and improve emission control. The HEI also eliminated the need for points/dwell adjustment. The aftermarket ignitions claim better performance at higher RPM but most work no better than the HEI in our street/strip vehicles.
What is important is to get an adequate spark to the plugs at the correct time".
