Just pulled the motor to repaint it and the engine compartment. The pontiac blue was flaking to a dark blue undernieth. I did see a 69 stamed by the rotor. Is this a 69 engine? Were they dark blue originally? Jeff
That's the main reason why it's getting repainted, it looks the same color as the F word you mentioned. Maybe a crate motor?? This dark blue is the first color the motor was painted, it's on there pretty good. The correct color was applied over the top and comes right off. I just finished painting the intake the correct color, now that's a pretty blue! Is that where they coded the year of the block in 69, back by the distributor? Jeff
the 'date' code I think is back there but the block code is another thing... this is what posted on the 'ramblings' section whjere you had similar question..
I have a 72 block YX in my 69... if your engine was repainted and is a 69 (Firebird Engine) it should have a two digit letter code on it under the valve covers on the front drivers side , like ,WC,WM,XL,XB,YJ,YE, WN,XC (350s),WZ,YT,WQ,YW,WH,XN (400s)for the different V8s
these numbers are all out of a Firebird redbook, there are other possiblities too if engine came out of another Ponitac
Yes I got that but scared to look because of the fear it's not a Firebird motor being dark blue originaly. Even the back is dark blue by the flex plate. I need to get a new timing chain cover so I guess I'll have to find out weather I want to or not. The thing is ate up, no wonder it leaked. Jeff
I know it's a 69 pontiac built Nov 15 1968, go figure. Now... under the 0296692 code is a mess. This must have been stamped on 4:30 friday. It has a large 0 or O first then a large 7 (by large I mean bigger than the #'s above) with a jagged line crossing through diagnally then a S. The S is the only correct size stamp from what pictures I seen. These are not in a straight line but stair stepped about 1/8". If you guys can't visualize this I could try to send a pic. but haven't done it before. Jeff

my guess is that the engine was replaced at some time and they just happened upon a 69......nov 15 68 would be waaay to late to have a 68 leave the factory.... from your body tag you can tell when the body was built, left the factory within one week , max...
