Reading a post that was brought back up today, I wanted to bring this topic up.
I've got a 69 automatic that I've put Hedman headers on. Unfortunately, the headers block the steering lockout linkage from attaching from the tranny to the steering column so I no longer have anything to turn on my backup lights.
Has anyone come up with a way to modify the 69 setup to allow the use of the backup lights AND run headers at the same time?
I know I can add a goofy toggle switch right into the wires, but I would prefer something that is more "correct".
In previous posts people talked how 67/68 had the backup lights in the automatic shifter? Is this true? If it was a floor shifter, can that be adapted to use on a 69?
Thanks for any help. I need to get my car inspected and I don't want to run the chance of failing due to backup lights.
If it is just for the purpose of inspection and not for operability you could fool the inspector quite easily by reaching up and rotating your column ring when the inspector asks you to put car in reverse. The lights come on. Yes, I used to live in SA and have passed many inspections. Been pulled over there too and the officer asks,"How did you gets this piece to pass"?
I'd rather not "redneck" it if at all possible. I mean I WILL if I have to, but a working solution that actually activates the lights with the shifting of the gear selector on the floor would be best.
Didn't the 68 console shifters come with an integrated backup switch? Would probably be possible to fit it to the shifter, given that you just need the backup lights and disable starting it the shifter is in drive or reverse.
