I am going to put on 14x6 Steel wheels with Pov. Caps on my 68 350 ho Convertible. It is Solar Red with white top and interior. My question is would they be painted body color or black? Does anyone know for sure on this?
Also I have 2 14x6 wheels with the code FC and are looking at 2 others with the code HG that are 14x6. Numbers do not have to match here but want the offset to be right.
Even when using Pov. Caps? I am mostly familiar with GTO's and they seemed to be body color other than a few colors that required black. Not doubting you Jim but just have not found anything in print or anyone with knowledge on the subject. Just want to make sure I do this right.
I commend you for restoring with the original caps. It is seldom that I see hubcaps of any type on 1st Gens, let alone the poverty style. I have stuck with my deluxe caps all these years while 99% of cars are running Rally IIs or custom wheels. I guess that's just me in my nonconformist mode.
I'm certainly not an authority in f/g/f's, but I have spent muiti decades hangin' out around them, especailly the po boys' cars. Based on what I have seen, it seems that first generation f-bodies had black wheels when wearing hubcaps.
I have a 68 HO that was rolled at 10,000 miles and sat in a shed that was built around the car with only a walk in door for the last 37 years,it has hubcaps and the wheels are black. The space saver spare is gray.To say this car is untouched is an understatement, the delco battery is still there.
The funny thing is that my car actually came with the Rally 2's from the factory and I want to go the other way . I know that if the car has wheel covers they were painted black but because of the poverty caps where they actually show I was thinking that they would be body color . The brochure is in black and white but looks like they could be black too unless certain colors required different color steel wheels for the pov. caps. It sure is confusing.
As a final vote, my original CA black license plate 1967 400 had the spinner hubcaps. I still have all 4 steel wheels (and the caps) and the wheels are black on both sides.
