The car is a 68 firebird sprint sport coupe, six cylinder four speed four barrel, #'s matching everything. How many of these cars were made and approximately how many are left in existence.
Also, what was the standard diff ratio in these cars?
The car has a hood tach, no power steering or power brakes, 4 bbl, 4 speed...and i think thats about it for options. One cylinder in the engine is weak (its got 40 pounds compression, the rest are 160.) I'd like to know if that'd either be because of the cam or the valves. Would you also be able to tell me how much horse power a guy could push out one of these little engines without getting too carried away? Thanx.
The cylinder is most likely from a stuck intake valve, or burned valve. I really doubt that it would be the cam- sounds like a good project.
You can easily push 250-270hp in these engines, with the 300 mark attainable. 4bbl cam, good head work, headers with good exhaust, Clifford intake, a good ignition (aftermarket MSD or Crane) and so on. I've made a factory-appearing setup go to 260hp without any headaches.
I have a friend in my local Firebird club here in WA with a 69 Sprint convertible (I'm sure you know him from your OHC group? Brad) Anyway, he's building his extra 68 Sprint motor into a monster 6! Completely built, cliford intake and headers, AND a supercharger! Now some might consider that getting carried away, But I think it's great!
68OHC is right... you can easily get close to 300 HP with out going overboard! And there are a lot more options out there now for the OHC then there was when I had mine in 83'... wish I still had it!
I say go for it and enjoy it! It's well worth the effort!
Yeah, he has... (Sprint69) He's going with a Holley blow through, the Bonnet, and the super charger... has the intake and headers etc... just fabricating the bracket for the super charger and should have it on the Dyno anytime now... just waiting to hear back!
Gotta love something wild and different!

I'm doing a similar setup; a Procharger P600B, a serpentine setup, and Accel DFI adapted to a Clifford intake. It will also have a Vintage Air kit with the AC compressor mounted below the SC.
