Better yet if you could have walked into a dealership in the 60's or 70's, with money no issue, and custom ordered your dream car what would it have been? Doesn't have to be a Pontiac. Here's mine.
1965 GTO Hardtop, Red/Black, 389 Tri-Power and a 4-speed.
Of course I would have traded her in late in 68' to order one of them there new Trans-Ams with a Ram-Air 3 and 4-speed.
I already had my dream car, 1970 Trans Am, but stupid me I sold it in 1994. But good news is that I recently did a vin search for it and it still exists. Talked with the owner and I hope to get first chance at buying it back if he ever decides to sell it, so maybe someday I'll have my dream car back.
That's a no brainer!...It would most definitely be a 1970 Chevelle SS454, LS6 (450 HP), equipped with the Muncie (M22) Rock Crusher and 12 bolt posi with 4.10 gears. Cowl induction. The interior would have to be black with bucket seats and a console. The exterior to be black also with white SS stripes. AS BAD AS IT GETS!!
Or my second choice would be a 1969 Camaro SS396, L78 (375 HP) also equipped with a Muncie 4-speed, 12 bolt posi, black interior with buckets and console. Black exterior with white SS stripes. ALSO, AS BAD AS IT GETS!!
My one day trip would be to 1967 for the Covette convertible. Might as well get me the 427 while I'm there. This era Corvette was the finest looking car ever made in my opinion. My second trip would be to a Mopar dealer in 1970.
If I had had a second choice , I`d pick the 67 Vette too, 427 ,close ratio gear box, silver w/ black....my dad had one , he also had the MB 300SL,he sold both in 68...
Well, If I could go back in time. In the 50's I wanted to by me a turquoise 2 door 57 chevy hardtop with a 283 Fuelinjecton .In the 60's I choose a tiger gold 66 GTO hardtop(to match my Coranado Gold 67 conv.)And a red 1970 GTO conv. The rest of the 70's did not do anything for me.(Carwise)
I might add, my Chevelle and Camaro would be coupe's as I never did care for convertible car's.
And my third choice, if I had any leftover cash, would be a Mopar...A 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner, Coupe...Equipped with a 426 Hemi (425 HP), 4-speed hemi tranny, Dana 9 3/4 sure grip rear end with 4.10 gears. The interior would be black with bucket seats and console and a firebird calender hanging off the rearview mirror!...no, just kidding! The exterior would be all black as well except for the flat black hood. THIS IS ALSO AS BAD AS IT GETS FOR A MOPAR!
If one, a 1969 Ram Air IV Judge with hidden front headlights--orange of course. I would also like a 1962 421SD dual quad Catalina, 68 Ram Air II Firebird and a 69 Trans Am. I also like the 67 427 435 horsepower Vette, but I'll stick with Pontiacs.
1970 hemi super bird 4 speed lime lite green dana 60 4.10 gear

Boy, a lot of choices. In addition to those already listed...
Raven black '69 Boss 429 Mustang. Semi-hemi NASCAR aluminum head motor, 4 speed top loader, 9" 3.89:1 gear, Detroit Locker. Back in the day the uncle of a friend of mine had one of these machines. Unreal car! One of the best kept secrets in Detroit.
Any of the lightweight NHRA super stock offerings.
A neighbor down the street had a '70 Super Cobra Jet 429 Torino. (I think it was a '70) I remember as a kid that car when it was brand new. Just driven home from the local Ford dealer. Car was nearly beat to death in a couple years, sat in the garage until one of the guys I grew up with bought it for next to nothing, kept the 9" rear end for his '74 Camaro and scrapped the rest. Man, if we had any idea what this stuff was going to be worth today.....
One of my other neighbors bought a '70 Chevelle SS454 LS6 brand new. Silver with black strips, black interior. TH400, 12 bolt with 3.73 posi. This was one bad car. I remember this car easily leaving two black tracks all the way down the street. I also remember going to a place called Hi-Precision Tune with the owner one Saturday morning. They put it on the chassis dyno and found 387 HP at the rear wheels! (of course I didn't understand the meaning of this at the time but it was a big deal as the owner claimed bragging rights in the neighborhood.) I also clearly remember the 454 fender badges on this car being white instead of the red backgound the LS6's are "supposed" to have. In '76 or '77 a friend of mine bought this car, restored it over many years to pristine original condition. Complete with original white badges. I've long since lost track of him and the car. Hmmmm...
One of my other friend's dad bought a '69 427 Impala that was a couple years old. I remember this car being "no big deal" with all the other cars in the neighborhood. Think about that sports fans! (of course my dad had a '69 Bel Air 4 door with a 327 & Powerglide at the time. Yawn.)
The one that got away.... My next door neighbor bought a brand new '67 Camaro convertible before she was married. Car was almost perfect having spent it's entire life in the garage. She rarely drove it as her husband didn't like the car. For years I pleaded with her to let me buy it when she was ready to sell. In 1980 they bought new Mercury Zephyr. When I asked what happened to the '67 she told me the dealer offered 'em $400 in trade and her husband jumped at it. I never spoke to her husband again. (Shortly there after she didn't either. She found someone else. He kept the Zephyr. A**hole!)
The one I should have kept. '70 Pontiac Bonneville convertible, brown, tan top, brown interior. Every factory option. 370 hp 455, TH400 3.08 posi. This car flew on the highway! My brother bought it in '74 from the original owner, I bought it from him in '78. Man, I should have kept that car but I was a dumb kid.
When I was a kid I didn't really understand it at the time. I look back on some of these events in wonder. Everyday stuff back in the day, nothing all that special. The steel plants and railroads paid well. In the neighborhood I can think of almost a dozen really hot cars that I would love to have today. Thinking back on those days... It's no wonder the Big Three are in trouble today. Cars back then did excite people.
I still remeber in 1968 my dad dragging me out of a Plymouth dealership. My sister and I went a little crazy beeping a horn in a Road Runner.Got a pretty whooping. Later that day he purchased a 1968 Firebird 400 convertible 4spd. Mayfaire Maze with black interior. My dream car would be a 69 Trans Am 4sp. I still remember seeing one at the auto parts store where I worked in Long Island. Awesome machine, Maybe one day.
69 RA III T/A Auto 69 Sprint vert 3speed ( sold to a new home) 69 350 coupe ( new home in Denver) 69 350 HO 4spd
Hey Dennis funny you mention the 70' Torino. Back in high school I was running around in my 68' Camaro and of course all my buds had cars too but one friend in particular had a Red on Black 1970 Torino 428 Cobra-Jet car. It was the fastest car in school and I never tried to race against him. Lost track of him after graduation (1987) but last year at our annual downtown cruise in and concert he showed up with it. He has never sold it and now runs a body shop up around Indy. I just think that is cool.
well it's 1:00 am just got home from working at the auto rama in detroit i help my friend sell hot wheels now i know why i blew them up as a kid let just say i'm going to have nightmares about hot wheels for a day or two but it was cool to see all the cars for 3 long days if any one care as much as me only two 67 firebirds one had a chevy 350 boooooo and the other was well i'll try to be nice poop it should of stayed in the garage if he kept it there need some work one 69 trans am white w/ blue strips all orig. super nice car and a lot of gto's it was great see pontiac standing strong be we need to get some of these car we are working on and show all those mopar and chevy freaks what we are all about

Thumbs up Birdman, I too have the car I always wanted.. My site shows the 83 I rolled, and my 79 that was stolen.
Great story James...
and my story....
My father-in-law was the second owner who purchased it in 1974. He was Air Force and later got into Vette's but kept the car under tarps in Nevada.
When he passed, my brother-in-laws got the new pick-up, the motor home, the 78 Collector Vette and several pieces of property. He left the Bird to my wife and nobody really wanted anyways since it was in such bad shape.
Today I'm closing in on 30 grand and 4 years of resto, everyone else has pissed away their inheritance.
My wife was dropped off to school in this car as a teenager several times and it is a tangible memory of her father. Never once has she complained about one dime I have spent, however, I did get some raised eyebrows when I said Butler wanted 11 grand to put a new 455 on my dock.
Currently my 400 motor is at "thee Jim Hands" machine shop and we fully expect 400hp when completed.
Next year I do the electronics and custom leather interior with discreet fiber optic lighting. I'm figuring a total of 40 grand when finished.
Can't wait to roll up on a snot-nose in a Honda fart box blarring his rap and then drown him out with some Elvis Presley or Chuck Berry as he watches my taillights disappear.
i feel ya about the money tree slimm picken here about 10,000 in the motor but its full roller hoping it snaps a few necks back about 30,000 in the whole project probly more i lost count all the nickle and diming me it all adds up but worth every penny
pedal to the metal keep those tires smoken

If... I could go back... then I might as well have just as much imaginary cash as could use... (Just as a precursor, all cars ordered would be 4-speeds, the highest HP and would have just about every option you could possibly get!)
So I'd go back to 1963 to buy a split window tanker Vette and order up a well equipped GTO, then I'd jump up to 1966 and order a 1967 Firebird, a Camaro, a Mustang Fastback, a Cobra... Then I'd jump up to next year from 67 - 72 and order much the same, but would add GTO's 68 - 70, Roadrunners, GTX, Super Bee Chargers, AMX's etc. Then in 69 would order one of just about every Muscle car available for 1970 - 1972...
Basically I'm a car guy, and I love them all, and would go for broke as long as I'm dreamin here... Seems like from 64 on... each year there were a couple more to add to the list each year. Especially 1968 - 1970... wow, would that be hard to choose only one! But if it were down to one or two, that "I" would just love to have ordered it would be a 69 GTO and a 70 TA... I love em all, but some day will have to add those two to the ones I own!
Great topic... love to "dream" about my list...
My 67? Paid $5k (bad motor, but LOT's of work done to the car) found a fresh standard 455 for $700... put maybe $2000 into it if that much and am lovin every minute of it. http://www.brettliukkonen.com/myvert1.jpg (As I bought it) http://www.brettliukkonen.com/new42002A.jpg (2 years ago... now has new interior and lots more detail work done)
