ok, I did not delete the whole topic, then someone else did....I have been out of town , and after that I have been at work, did not have time to read all topics..... as far as I`m concerned topics are let to 'carry on' as long as they are not misleading or hostile..... discussions are discussions, as long as people behave in them....like this one...thats all.

It was in the 80's here today. With all talk from the Texas group and weather here, got the itch to start working on getting my Firebird back on the road earlier than planned. I even have the "boss" convinced it is ok to start now.
I am sure I will be hanging out in the Tech Section once I get started. Funny how what I thought was going to be a simple decision turns out to be more complicated than planned. Need to decide what engine hoist to get for my needs and if I want it to be able to get it and the trans out at the same time.
I've pulled the motor both ways (with tranny & without).
I'd recommend NOT taking the tranny unless you have too. I'd drop the drive shaft and wire the tranny "up" once the motor is removed so it doesn't sag/hang there.
Geoff, if you have a Harbor Freight store around, I would recommend their folding unit. I got it on sale for $149.00 and is working just fine for the limited usage I have for it.
Makes a difference if it's a 4 speed or auto. I like to pull the whole engine and trans unit when it's a 4 speed. If you don't have a favorite tree or a very strong garage ceiling a cherry picker works the best. Ah, get to answer the site owners tech questions. Going to have to practice up the 'quick draw' answers. With my luck he will be asking when I'm out west on vacation!
Over the weekend we swapped three motors using that same Harbor Freight folding cherry picker. We removed an OHC with the ST300 still attached, so I know that can be done, too. The trick was to get the rear end of the car as far up as it could go. Then the trans has enough room to tilt downward as the balancer clears the core support.
