Like Vikki, I would like to see every detail of that car. There are some oriiginality things that might be learned here. For example I see engine paint on the PCV grommet and heavy body color paint on the rear frame area, stripes on the upper radiator hose
When Rod asks his questions I wasn't shy about answering. Here's an example: https://firstgenfirebird.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=23;t=004574;p=1
Guys I'm in and out checking for parts and info. Please guys if you see where I'm here but don't respond, don't take it personally.I've got two kids here one of which is 18 months old is here because her mother and father have been deployed to Iraq.I've got two other firebirds and a camaro.I've been thinking alot about this car and have found that I can have all the body panels replaced for about $8,000.If she does not sell on Ebay,Goodmark Industries, here she comes. As yellowbird asked about documenting the car, yes, give detailed list and some time and I can get it done.(Child care is really big business :-) .
Alright Rod! Good to hear from you and we all understand the time thing. No time to mess with posting, just a little time to have a look see. I think it would be a perfect candidate to do a complete rebody from Goodmark.
From your last reply it appears your going to put it on E-bay? Have you had any decent offers? Or were you starting to lean back towards keeping? I have 69's but agree with Vicki that it would be an awesome research project for someone to undertake for folks that have the 68. Hell, it even has piqued my interest. I would just hate to see you sell it on Ebay to someone that would just strip it and lose all of that historical data. Can you give us a ballpark of what you want for it?
You're right, just for historical data alone she should be restored. After my first post I put her up for auction, but after a few days of research I found that I can send her to Goodmark Industries for complete body panel replacement. So,thank you Vicki, and all those members who sugested that this car should be documented for is historical value (not to mention its sheer beauty.) So off to Goodmark she goes, after we document everything.
Good deal.....you have a good story there. You should put it together on a web page for others to follow. Maybe include the history of how it got to where it is today including pictures of the shed it was in.
I'll play the dumb one here, and say that I have never heard of this option to send your car to Goodmark for bodywork. I thought Goodmark made body panels, but never heard of anyone shipping the car to them for work.
I'd like to hear more on this, as my two original rear QPs look good but might be cardboard-thin in reality.
'68 428 HO M3 Monster, 4-on-the-floor! Need I say more?
Instead of heading off to the B O P car show down in Lebanon, Ohio I have decided to catch up on happenings at the org, and get the coupes dash reassembled.
It’s been about a month since this thread started up. Any word on what has happened to this time capsule? What a find and story behind the car.
Just started collecting the body panels needed, once I've got all of them then I'll start disassembly after that she's headed to Goodmark for installation.
Rod, this should be a superb story as you attempt to rebuild and get this baby on the road!!
I'd like to personally say that there are a few of us within flying/driving distance that could help with parts and experience as you go through this project.
I'm thinking this could be an "extreme home make-over" for an old classic Firebird. What I'm saying is, film everything you do, plus allow some of us to help and assist with the rebuild. This could wind up being the FGF story of the year!

Would be fun if i had the money I'll provide the storage for free!

At 3k with very limited rare servicable parts, that will be one expensive set of rotors. It is only a 1 of 4000 car (manual 350 HO).
Car is worth more together than parted at this point. In fact, IMO, $2500 would have been my limit. There is not one straight panel on that car, let alone the f/r bumpers. If you told me Steve McQueen owned the car before or upon his death, I may go 5k, sentimental reasons. I wouldn't touch that Bird (with all due respect) for anything more than $2500.
68 HO yes, 10k yes, all together, yes, rare, sort of. That is one HUGE project even if you did all of your own work at your cost as "" can do. Nostalgia, low milage and a pedigree is all I see. If I had the original title, maybe a little more. Although the original shocks are there, I replaced my 99 TA shocks after 108k.
I am a [censored], yes, but someone will froth at the mouth over this car and after a few years will be kicking a clydesdale hoof in the rear for even attempting a restoration.
A RAI/RAII car, a definate restoration candidate. A 400 HO car, maybe if a reputable and acknowledged Pontiac restorer completed all the work (Scott Tiemann) A wash as a NOM 400 car. A loss as an HO car.
Doubt me? Work the numbers. Reality yes, and certainly a realist.
Lets look at this realistically. An HO car, if there is a reserve.
68 NOS quarters Yea, right. repops not worthy of this car. $2250 per side 67/8 NOS fenders $1200 67/8 NOS emblems all around $1000-1500 Straight standard hood $100 New OEM bumpers, rechromed $700 Shocks probably still servicable, resto $150 (paint, labor) Complete front end rebuild (NOS) $800-1200 (refer r/s wheel) Assume frame is straight Panel replacement, paint, roof repair/replacement, roof rail moldings, inner moldings, body alignment, NOS door handles, hell, NOS everything, it is an HO car..$13-18k
$24k resto on the low end. And I am being generous. I would not doubt the potential buyer is not already considering a cowl plate/vin swap on this one. A rust free 68 shell can be had for less than 2k.
Let the debating begin.

I couldn't figure what about this car was bothering me...until I remembered I had a 67 HO 4 speed that I sold to Derek through this site.
The block code for a manual trans HO is WK. Seller lists block as WZ.
Probably an error or oversight. Not knocking the car or the find..or the owner for selling it. You must be a really good body man with a lot of money and patience to undertake. Heck, I would buy it and put a bungee cord on the drivers door to the seat bracket and drive it around as is.
Maybe put a bumper sticker on what bumper is there that reads "official stunt vehicle" or this one..
Banshee, I was just going to say that. I have a 68 HO and my block code is WK (manual trans). Maybe he cant read it right with all the rust on the front of the block?
Looks like he fixed the auction by adding that the engine is a WK.
I noticed something one day when I was ogling at the pics. The water pump has been changed at some point. Funny for that to happen before 10000 miles. I've seen stranger things....
