YOU CAN DO IT NASH!i quit 1 1/2 yrs ago.i was smoking 3 packs a day and i started smoking when i was 12.if i can quit;so can you.you can call me for support any time you feel the need
Yes, you can do it. It sounds like you're mentally prepared, which is the hardest part, in my book.
I smoked for 30 years and quit cold turkey about 3 years ago. Like you, I didn't smoke inside any more and generally made it inconvenient enough so that smoking was a PITA.
You need to be more powerful than the cigs. They'll kill you.
I went on the nicotine patch and quit smoking 3 months ago John. It is working for me so far. 20+ year/ pack a day smoker.I'll assume the drug is like the patch i use in where it is a nicotine replacement therapy where the levels are reduced in stages until you are weined off.It is the mental warfare your mind plays with you that you will find most challenging (IMO) I feel great, breath and sleep so much better now but there are still demons lurking inside me that sometimes pop in and out and tempt me.Best of luck to you John.Be strong, you can do it!!!

Hey Nash, I truely wish you well in your latest project. I'm in the same shoes you were in LAST week and would love to be where you will be in a few months. Long & short is, what new drug are you on? I tried the welbutrin once and failed. My problem is that my head is harder than my will is strong.
28 hours into this and I am DYING for anything with fire on the end of it!! I'll smoke a dead snake at this point if i can get some inhalation out of the darn thing!
Actually, all is well, and I am (for the first time in over 25 years) passing though my first day without a cigarette. No buying, no bumming, no ashtrays to dig through. Its all gone. I will never buy a pack of cigarettes again.
I'm on the new drug, plus I've chewed 12 pieces of Nicorette today just to help. Its worked thus far. I needed that gum today.
I'm doing alright, all my friends. Thanks so much for the posts and stories here. Never knew there were so many smoker FGFers. You all are a tremendous support system for me.

I have been smoke free 5 years now and sounds like you went the same steps as me. not indoors not around the wife and kids. if it what you want and it sounds like it you will. Hopefully in a little while you won't even be thinking about it
Your life depends on this Nash, try to stay away from other smokers too.
When my first child was born, I reduced myself to a beer bottle with a candle sticking in it off in the corner of my garage. The doctors told me children have respiratory problems in homes of smokers, so that was the turning point for me.
Nash, one of the reasons I redid the interior AND changed the carpet in my bird was because the P/O I believe used to go out and sit in the car and smoke... If I had it closed up for a while, you'd open it up and it smelled like some one had just been smoking in there... nasty. I'd want that old car smell... not the old ashtray smell...
I hear you Brett, but rest assured I never smoked in my Firebird! About ten years ago I basically made myself smoke only outside in the yard or woods with nobody around. I knew then it was an ugly habit and I had no right to expose others to it. Day THREE coming up!

Best of luck to you. It was hard for me to quit. Just had to figure out what it was that kept me smoking. I have a friend at work that now chews Nicorette as much as he used to smoke. He's been on the gum for over a year now.

To err is human. To really foul things up takes a computer.

Fine, JM! 5th day now and all is well. I'm chewing the crap out of that gum though, the right side of my jaw is killing me! I'm beginning to wonder if the GUM might kill me! I see Doctor Wanker again on Tuesday morn and will ask him about that.
No smoking of any kind since Tuesday afternoon. I can't believe I am doing this, never thought I could before.
The wife and I took the bird out today and drove for hours into the country, eating, checking out antique shops, and stopping at flea markets along the Tenn/KY border. Had a blast and realized that while flying around in the bird, I have no thoughts or desire to smoke! Need to drive the bird to work a few times during the week I guess!
Again, I want to thank you ALL for caring and sharing your thoughts on my attempt to quit. I will never buy a pack of cigarettes again!!!
Can I smoke a good cigar once in a while maybe down the road? :p

Sounds like you are making the corner, it was that way for me, where I was thinking about it every hour on the hour all a sudden I was going to bed before I realized I hadn't thought about it. Keep it up
You can do it. It will be 3 years end of this month for me. I still have the half a pack of cigs I had when I quit. Any time I wanted one I would remind myself that all the suffering I had endured to that point would be wasted and that would be same as self inflicted torture. If you can go 1 day you can go for ever. I would say no to the cigar. My brother inlaw tried that after quitting for a year and is now back to 2 packs a day.
Nash, after awhile go over to non nicotine gum (if thts what you use now), I quit myself 1976 , no problem, my wife quit 21 yrs ago; she still wants one, I think we keep the gum manufacturer in businness!
This has nothing to do with smoking but I saw that you are from Nashville. I am from Nashville also. Do you no any Firebird owners in Nashville? Did you do all the work to your firebird? Do you know of any good, trustworthy people or businesses to do engine and body work on my Bird? Ronfox@newhorizonscorp.com
Ron, I'm a half hour north of Nashville, out in the country. I know a few shops in the Clarksville area that do good work, but I mostly do it all myself with the help of folks here on the website.

Hi Nashville68Bird. Do you ever make it to Nashville? Do you ever hit any of the crusins in Middle Tennessee? (Murfreesboro, Franklin, etc.) The one in Murfreesboro has alot of cars and a wide range of cars. Does Clarksville have any gatherings? What type of work can you do to your Bird? Why I ask is because I am not a gearhead and I need help with my Bird.
When you have time go to my topic "Help:Where do I Start? to see my story about my 69 Bird.
Since we both have Firebirds, it would be nice to meet you and see your Bird...it's just a thought. Maybe you could take a look at my Bird and give me some advice. Ronfox@newhorizonscorp.com
I started smoking in the 3rd grade, it seemed that this is what you did. My Mom, dad, sister, brother etc all smoked so even at the 3rd grade I thought it was normal as everyone smoked. By the 5th grade, I smoked a pack a day and my parents let me!!! WTF were they thinking. At the ripe old age of 20, I quit cold turkey. I opened my mouth while in the bathroom having my early morning smoke and couldnt see the back of my mouth and thought how stupid. I would never walk into a room if I couldnt see 3" with the heavy smoke. The worse thing was that I ended up getting a lung disease at 21 years old and am suffering for being stupid for so many years. I have not touched a cigarette or any other things that smoke for 25 years. Now my lungs are scar'ed and I am hypersensitive to smoke, dust exhaust and most any other things. And I cough almost daily because of them **** things!! Dont think you can smoke a cigar or anything without going right back to smoking cigs. Just stay away from them!!!
Its been over one month now and I've stopped counting. No need to, as I haven't smoked a cig or a cigar or a pipe. I even stopped the nicotine gum about two weeks ago. All is well my friends! If I can quit anyone can!

good job,i quit over a year ago.i was smoking 3 packs a day.i put them down and i have not picked another one up.i also started when i was 11 or 12 yrs old.i did not use the nicotine patch or gum.i made up my mind and that i was going to quit and i did.the hardest part was picturing myself as a non smoker.so you can do it john, one day at a time
And I'm a REAL anti-smoking [censored] now! I can't help it, I [censored] at everyone around me who smokes. I [censored] in restaurants and gas stations. I did NOT anticipate THAT side effect!
