In comparison to mine it isn’t far off from my convertible. It caught my eye because it’s the same color #55 (Crystal Turquoise) w/ black top. This cars tag was number 500,727 built in the 1st week of September at the Lordstown, Ohio plant.
My convertible is # 500278 built in the 3rd week of November at the Lordstown, Ohio plant.
The question I have is how did a ‘bird with an earlier build date get a higher sequence number. Did the Camaro tags have the same info and codes?
Hoy Tom, You have stumbled on to one of the ways you check a trim tag for it being a repro. When a repro tag is ordered you supply all the info to the manufacturer and they stamp it for you. The repro tag is only as good as the numbers supplied. You may ask the question; "Why spend $200 on a repro tag"?
The answer would be; "Because 1st gen Camaros are documented by the trim tag".
As you can see that this tag is being auctioned by Team Camaro. Some Camaro people still don't realize that a Pontiac can be researched through PHS. Sometimes they find out after they buy the tag.......
You have two choices here as to what to believe; It's either a repro or a factory missprint. I'm assuming that your tag is real and you haven't made any mistakes with your math.
Or it could be that vin numbers were ussued in lots of however many numbers, meaning that some lots may predate other lots, regardless to the other lot's sequential order.
No Merv. We are talking about the sequence number and not the vin number. The sequence numbers are supposed to be in line. Especially when you are talking about the same models and assembly lines.
As Jim said, body unit number should be sequential by build date in each plant, each model year.
Build date and VIN are by SERIES. Convertible numbers will not fit in the coupe sequence. Deluxe interior numbers will not fit in the standard interior sequence. I have enough information to approximate build dates for '67 generally within 2 weeks. Anyone wishing to contribute more data will allow me to provide a verifier as to whether the body tag corresponds to the VIN for '68 and '69, and will make '67 even more accurate.
So our two verts would not fall in line because mine has standard int and yours is deluxe int ? Let's test your theory with our dates and sequence numbers.
I`ll make a note to check the vin and the body tag again tonite ...thought I had it written down here somewhere ,but seem to have hidden it so well I cant find it now...but i`ll post when I know.......
That is neat. Mine is about 5000 off from where it should be. And to eliminate the possibility of a repro tag I bought the car from the original owner. Have broadcast sheet from under the seat and the original protecto plate.
Van Nuys had internal codes (TO42). As far as the sequencing, I cannot explain why your numbers are so far ahead for one car out of Lordstown. I've seen several similarly dated LORs (white convert at the Dream Cruise) that were within just a few hundred of mine.
Were the others you posted Lordstown builds, and were they coupes or convertibles?

They were LOR, 1st one vert, second one a coupe. I posted the VN one because it's unusual with having VN and not LOS. And also it's the same date week as ours but with numbers closer to mine even though it's at a different plant. I'm sure it's just an interesting coincidense.
See my post on page 2 with the numbers...you will see that bodies also sort by series (coupe vs. convertible). We need a LOT more samples to have a reasonable poll.
Since Van Nuys builds were tagged LOS, is this one a fake?

Yah! I'm about ready for the red 'hot seat' because my number seams a little fishy. I'm cool because it's on my broadcast sheet too. Thank heavens for documentation!
If we only had a December car. We have a two week shut down at our GM plants in Dec.. Was there a shut down back in 68? And why would there be a 5000 gap in numbers in the forth week of November? The posibility that my date in November is wrong is non existent because the car was sold a couple weeks later(per protecto-plate).
