looking good...you might want to do several layers , as these are "filled" almost even to the edges of the chrome outlines, if I remember correctly (w/o looking)

Maybe short term memory loss got the better of me, but I have been hands-on, non-stop/wrapped-up with the fgf since 74. I don't recall factory painte emblems having a transulent color to them. They were simply an off bric-red (for lack of a better description) and it was more of a satin or flat finish. Also, I recall seeing nos oem birds for sale, and if I recall correctly, they also had the flat brick red.

Is everyone sure that the fancy dancy paint isn't a owner upgrade from way back in the 70's? Imagine! Someone using the latest early 70's fingernail polish, and suddenly, it's considered to be the correct color. Based on what I have seen, I wouldn't doubt it. Anyway, we can keep it according to the board's status becuse I don't want to bust anyone's bubbles.

Some emblems just had paint and some had the thicker clear on top. Specifically or your 69 Amerv, look at your tail panel trunk lock Bird emblem. It should have a thick clear coat.
On the 67-68 the gas door and also the glove box emblem had it.

Jims right, my 67 326 FB Rag from years ago had the clear finish on the emblems, I remember as they were scratched and faded...unless everyone had a fingernail polish fetish on these things, which I doubt.

My emblems on the front have the thick clear coating as well, I'll take a pic this week.

Lets make one thing clear, just to be on the safe side; I do not have a fingernail polish fetish of any kind. I admit, it might look a bit like "fancy dancy paint" on the pic, but in fact it looks quite good! Especially with the clear finish over it...

Just as a reference, I removed all my emblems, and all though I cannot be sure wether or not they are originals, the bird emblems have a plastic inlay, which is glued in the frame. You can boil it out, and then it comes off in one piece.

I think its quite rewarding to restore the worn out emblems!

I also did the 326 hood emblems. I think the red and black colors are standard right?

My 9 doesn't have it, and I have never seen ANY fgf birds with clear over the emblems. When I mean never, I mean from way back 30 years ago before people started restoring them.

Mine all had the "clear coat" and i purchased a NOS set of fender emblems about 20 years ago that have the "clear coat".

My '69 also had the thick, somewhat rubbery clear layer on the trunk lock emblem.

The bird emblems have the clear. The numbers and letters do not.

Last update, just because I'm pretty pleased with the entire emblem redo I did over Christmas. All are ready to put back on the bird now...!

Hey guys, I finally finished on of my emblems. My gas door finger pull emblem was really bad, so I figured i'd start there. Well, I went to my local hobby shop and brought like 10 tested them all over like 3 months lol. I found the perfect colors for us(Tamiya color clear red acrylic painted testors black). The red I found turned out great and the black as well. Each of the paints have their own website you can order from. heres some pics

No, I filled it in with clear coat( any kind of model clear will work). When you fill the red and black, leave some room so that you can put the clear in. i filled the clear all the way to the rim. the emblems are made so that the ends are all higher the the middle,this way you can fill the clear all the way up to cover everything

I went the easy way here is a repop i bought. i tllooks fine to me and no sweat involved

Yea I was going to get one too, but didn't want to spend the $24 (i know im cheap lol). So i just brought the paint for 3 bucks and did it wile i was at work,so i also got payed for it lol

I followed the label directions, that was a long time ago so I don't recall offhand. It was pretty low temp.

What is the safest thing to use to get the old paint off the emblems?

I think I soaked mine in solvent or break cleaner overnight. Its plated metal, so I think pretty much any cleaner or solvent will be safe.

how do you get the emblems off safely? has anyone painted them right on the car? sounds like they need baked, so i am guessing not....

There are new ones you can buy, not worth painting as it's a plastic piece. You need to get a small socket wrench to remove 2 nuts on the inside of the fender.

I know this is an old thread but, I had an idea and didn't know if any thought about it.

We have a bunch of nos parts but, we still need the Keylock bezel and the rear sidemarker bezels. So, I was wondering how to redo these parts.

Has anyone talked to the companys that make collector pins? think they call pins with with filled painted areas like the emblems "clousinea" (sp) or something like that. those pins remind me of the bezels and badges.

Question, Can these bezels be recromed? and them painted?
