Hello everyone,, this is my very first post here... my question is, someone else put a different shifter in my 1968 firebird coupe before I bought it.. they cut the tunnel to make a fit for this shifter.. the motor is a 1974 455cu. I'm not for sure if it's a GM Muncie Tranny, I think it is.. the housing is aluminum.. What I am wondering is I've seen Classic Industries sells a complete 4 speed shifter assy. for the 68 Camaro,, is that the same for a firebird, were they the same back in 1968,???.. Will it fit okay??.. TIA
You will have different shifter bodies and different handles. Wheras, you may have the correct body/base (brains) and have the incorrect handle (chrome)
I am not a second gen expert, but I believe some came with Muncie transmissions and some with Borg Warner.
Are we dealing with a First Gen Firebird that this 455 is in? What year, and what trans. If I have this, I can set you up with the correct shifter body, handle and linkage.
If you get me the main case number on the side of the trans, that will help. Also check out this..
The correct base part number stamped on it is 3138. I have one here the handle part number..5325.
The drawback of a used, but correct shifter is that they always require a rebuild. I have owned 3 Firebirds with the correct shifters and they all needed a rebuild due to sloppy or loose shifts. You can buy that new one, which is correct or a used one and have Pete Serio rebuild it.
Is he cheap? NO, is he the best? yes. He is $75 more than other rebuilders but there is nobody else out there that does his quality of work, guaranteed.

As far as I know I'll probly need everything because the one I have in the car now does not fit my body style.. I'm guessing I'll need the linkage and whatever else it takes to do it right... Mounting brackets????
I have an extra shifter..You may be able to use your existing shifter rods. There are numbers stamped on all of the rods. You will have to take a look and post results. I'll look at mine and compare.
The reason your trans tunnel is hacked up is because of the existing shifter offset as installed. You (may) have to buy a correct mounting plate as well.
I have a 69 Z/28 shifter in my HO right now. I bought 2 of the same shifter bodies and handles just cause. I have to sell the Camaro shifter and will likely pay for one of the replacements.
I have a picture of the correct shifter mount if needed. CI sells the complete shifter rod kit for $89. Has all the shifter rods and mounting plate. All you need is the shifter body/handle.

Just helped Rick C with this. When you get the numbers off the case we can determine if Muncie or T-10. Buy Hurst shifter # 3914339 listed for 68 firebird. If you have T-10 buy install kit #3738609 for 74-81 firebird w/ T-10. If you have Muncie, buy the install kit recommended for stock 68 Firebird. Jim and I hashed this around for the last few months, I told him what worked for me. What he is suggesting should be 100 % . Pics of what you actually have would help. Sometimes you can have a real "what the hell is this". You never know what someone has & will use. You are at least at the best place there is for help when you need it. Almost forgot my shifter " THE FINE PIECE THAT IT WAS" was supposed to be 78. THANKS EVERYONE!!!!!! Rick
I have 67 and it is my understanding that the correct tranny for these cars is a "451" case muncie. The 451 case tranny fits perfect w/shifter #391-4339 ($175) and linkage kit #373-4529 ($92).. This set up worked for me..
PLT1, Same as links I posted but the prices went up slightly since you bought yours. And a note, your 67 originally had a slightly different style shifter than the 68-69.
