After breaking in the cam last night the freeze plugs on the passenger head started leaking. The rear plug leaked for about 30 seconds and then stopped but the front one was spraying out of a small pinhole leak. I ended up replacing the front freeze plug. I'm considering putting JB Weld around the edges on the rear plugs to help seal them. I don't want to tear apart the top end at this time. Do you think the JB Weld would be a good solution to my problem?
I did this originally but the gasket material turns to a "liquid" state when the engine heats up. An engine builder I know recommended "weatherstrip glue". That yellow, stringy, sticky stuff. He says once it dries it won't go liquid. Also, he's never had a freeze plug leak using it.
i use a gasket sealer from GM dont have the number for it at the moment but its used for the steel shim head gaskets, it comes in a small can with a brush attached to the lid and its brown in color, it works very well and i have never had any leakes when using it. i use it for all my gaskets that have to do with water, and on fuel pump, timming cover, and on the outside of any seals like timming cover, and on the oil pan. it works better than silcone. it dont plug things up when you use to much
Jusride - I have done semi-permanent repairs with JB Weld on the next size smaller freeze plug inserted into the leaking one. Make sure you get it cleaner than clean and then clean it again with lacquer thinner or brake clean to get off any oily residue.
