Well...looks like something is screwy in my PS. No noises, no leaks, but no power steering either...(seem to come on a bit at 30-40 mpg but that could just be the speed).
Should I replace the pump first? I thought there was little to go wrong in those things!
I believe the hoses go on only one way on the pump don't they and obviously the pressure fitted line goes directly to the pump...wheras the return goes to the metal line via clamp.
Yes Vikki, topped up and belts adjusted nicely...tubes were blown out with compressed air before installation.
Can these pumps be had at your local auto parts place (or ordered in there)
I would think back about the history of the pump and steering box. Did you drive the car with these before restore? Did you alter or take them apart for comestic or other reasons?
You can get rebuilt units pump and gears at your local parts stores for the same price or cheaper than the catalog houses.
Not sure what is causing your issue, but I did read when I installed a new pump to have wheels off the ground and go full left to right about 20 times or so with engine off. Then repeat the step with the wheels to the ground and engine on.
Yes, the lines only go on way as to how they hook to the pump. I think ho means are they reversed as to where they attach to the gear box? I don't know if there is an in/out, probabaly so. Check this type of stuff out before you go buying new stuff.
I'll try the wheel up trick tomorrow. see if that helps first Can't reverse them on the box Amervo...they are different size fittings if I recall..but I did check and all looks OK...it seems the power comes on if I am running down the road...

They have made some improvements on the pump design since 68. You probably have better steering than the car ever had. Now you are set for the newer designed box too. They have a totally different design to the valve body than the originals had.
for my 69 (with a 72 engine) I bought a rebuilt ps pump for $30 last year...the parts to rebuild it yourself were $35....! Yes more than a re built...so...I saved that job...
I just bought a lifetime warranty pump from Napa as well as a ilfetime quick ratio grear box for my 68. The two together were $210 and they both look and fit perfectly...
Good. Sounds like pumps aren't generally that expensive. I had to put the original one back on that I thought had gone bad because the other lost the seal around the casting. Now the this one is starting to leak as well. They both work fine but leak. Jim, how's the casting come out of the can? There's got to be some kind of bolt holding it together, right? I'm think all I need to replace is a big ole O ring maybe.
Any suggestions what to look for? I assume they use the same pittman arm as I am about to spring for one from rareparts and they want $130 bucks for it!!! I may look around!!
