I am in the process of installing a tilt column from a late 70's model firebird in my 69. The local auto parts stores do not have an ignition switch for a 69. Is there any other year or model that will work or does anyone know where I can get the correct one? Can I just use the one off my original non tilt column? Thanks, David
David, I think the ignition switch is the same on GM cars and trucks up thru '88 maybe beyond. The only difference is the key code changed every year. So yes you can use your non tilt column switch. That way you won't have the door locks worked on by a locksmith to match a new ignition switch. My cammer came with three keys, what a PITA. So I took my door locks to a locksmith.
From what I can figure out so far is, the tilt and nontilt are the same switch but they are built 180 degrees of each other. The switch is the same, it is just built on brackets that mount opposite. It appears the 1969 pontiac switch is different than others. It has an extra terminal. To solve my problem. I removed my original nontilt switch from the mounting bracket and installed it in the bracket of a later model tilt switch bracket and now I have created a 1969 tilt switch. P.S. do not attempt if you are not good with small contact points and springs as the switch being spring loaded will come apart if you are not extremely careful.
