Hi Guys, I just installed the 467 stroker in my 68 Firebird. I went with the Performer RPM intake and the Edelbrock Thunder 800 carb with electric. choke. It doesn't appear that the drop-down air cleaners will clear the choke assm. or the throttle linkage. The standard 3" X 14" air cleaner is too high. I'm wondering if I could go with a 2" element instead and mayber use one of those lid filters also. Any ideas? I wouldn't be opposed to putting a cone filter up front somewhere and plumbing it to the carb like those cold air intakes (K&N etc.). I just haven't seen any adapters that mount to the carb and can attach to the tubing. Any ideas? Thanks for the help! Dave
If possible you should really use a 3 inch (at least! w. 467 stroker)..
Mark the places where it doesn't clear the carb, -and either make a hole and then epoxy-glue a new piece that clears the carb, -or make some good use of that collection of hammers you (proberbly) have..
-As long as the dents in the aircleaner base is not visible who cares??
-Also the x-stream tops that k&n produce are really adding to the flow..
I remember having the same issues with my RPM. I used a drop base air cleaner and a 3" element with maybe 1/2" clearance. I had solid motor mounts made. You can go with the smaller element. If you were to see the pancake air cleaner Pontiac installed on the 400, and the size of that element, 2" will be marginal with a stroker.
There are a few air cleaner bases from later Pontiac that will work, just have to search the archives for the exact applications. Mine, I believe was an older Moroso base/lid.

I had the same problem. I added 3 air cleaner gaskets to lift the base just enough to miss the choke. I then put a 2" filter on to miss the hood insulation. My car is a stock 350 edelbrock set up.

I put an open element on a car with insulation once. It started sucking the insulation off! Solution: remove insulation.
The Moroso or K&N drop base will work. I had the RPM intake with a Q-Jet w/electric choke, and then a Holley 950. It's tight, but it will fit with a 14 x 3.5 filter. The 14 x 3 should not be a problem, assuming you do not have underhood insulation.
I have the insulation. I'm going to see if I can "modify" a drop base that I have so it will clear the electric choke on the E'brock carb. We'll see..... Thanks for all the help guys........
What is the measurement from the bottom of the base to the lip that sits on the carb flange? I have a drop base but it hits the eletric choke. It appears that if I modify it to clear the choke, it will be into the base seal area where the filter sits. Thanks a ton for the help! Dave
