My dash lights in my 68 are too dim to see the guages while driving at night. There is some difference in intensity obtained by turning the light switch - from none to barely noticeable. Turning it all the way brings on the interior lights. Is the rheostat the most likely culprit?
Could also be that several of the bulbs on the back of the dash cluster are dead.
The factory illumination does leave a lot to be desired. Many people have upgraded to higher amp bulbs or LED's. I installed a '68 Rally Gauge cluster on my '67 and when I was refurbishing it, I repainted the interior of the rear metal can white instead of the factory duck egg blue. That made a HUGE difference.

Can you remind me of what the higher AMP bulbs for dash illumination are? I recall seeing the bulb part number on a post a while back but have not been able to find it. 194 is the standard bulb part number. I also recall seeing a post about LED bulbs that can be plugged into OEM sockets but cannot find them on any of the catalog sites.
I'm working on correcting the same issue right now. Just do a Google search for 168/194 bulbs and you will find everything you need including LED bulbs that will work.
Thanks for the suggestions. Now I've got another problem. I have disc brakes on the front ( 4 piston calipers) and I have lost the pin (apparently fell out or broke) that holds the pads in place in the caliper. I have checked all the local parts suppliers and even the specialty suppliers like Ames and Classic Industries and nobody has the part. Any suggestions on where to find a replacement pin. They are not available from GM either.
