I am sure there are some other old-timers here. But who remembers this flip side of the 1968 Chewy Chewy 45 rpm record? The all new 1967 Firebird car was a huge hit and Ohio Express wrote a song about it. A girl neighbor across the street from me bought a new 1968 OHC 6 hardtop. When I got out of the Army I needed a car for work and she sold it to me. It was my DD for 16 years until it literally rusted out from under me.
Jim, you would have had to have bought the 45 rpm record or the 33 rpm album. I bought both. While they hit the charts with the bubble-gum music, the albums have some really good 60's rock/psychedelic music on them. They were a very under-rated group yet have a loyal following still to this day. I was watching American Pickers and they visited the Ohio farm of Tim Corwin, the drummer. He was into restoring old English cars and motorcycles. They bought from him a mint 1966 BSA 650 Lightning. I almost fell off my chair because I rode a 1966 BSA 650 lightning while I was in the Army. I left it in Germany because of the awful electrical issues it had. Lucas strikes again.
I was a teenager in the 60's so, yeah, that was my time too. I can go back to the 50's for rock&roll and rockabilly, 60's rock and head music, 70's punk rock, 80's new wave, and I can appreciate the newest Indie rock. There is a huge Indie movement in Brooklyn with a lot of new bands making great music.
So no other songs about a first gen bird. In fact no movies or TV either. Plenty of second gens: Smoky, Rockford, McQ, Wraith, endless. But any first gen is always a Camaro. Why? Eat my Dust, Christine, Chicago Fire, always a Camaro.
ALLRIGHT!!! I stand corrected! And the one in the Tritt video looks like my Aleutian Blue. As for Jeannie, I only remember the GTO. Did not see Matrix. I guess I don't get out much.
Oh, I wasn't correcting you. I thought your "So no other songs about a first gen bird..etc" was rhetorical, asking for more examples. So, I went to my files to offer more for your thread.
I Dream of Jeannie had some great "new" '60s Pontiacs.
I had a couple ads too but I can't find them yet. One was a Campbell's soup ad with an NFL player and another I saw in a UAL flight magazine for something, I forgot what.
Jim, if you have more keep them coming. I like anything Firebird. I did spend many years playing with second gens because they were so plentiful. I just helped a friend save a solid 1980 TA with a transplanted 400. But I only have a single friend with a first gen. We both have had a few hardtops over the years. Right now we are trying to get our 1968 convertibles finished. We have been saving them for over 40 years and we are both bogged down with family/life headaches. Anything that gets us motivated is welcome! Movies, songs, adds, brochures, magazine articles, anything to keep the flame burning. That is why a site like this is so important. It is sad, but we don't even see a first gen at car shows anymore around here.
I just remembered this one; a 2018 Illinois Tourism TV ad that has one of our Midwest Firebirds club members and his '67 driving near the Route 66 Association of Illinois Hall of Fame and Museum in Pontiac Illinois and the Pontiac-Oakland Automobile Museum.
Interesting ad. I was born in Chicago. How about this? A buddy had a record shop and I snagged a Pearl Jam poster loaded with posters from various shows. This one always made me smile. It is from the 1998 San Diego tour. I'm not a huge fan but their posters would be right at home in a ZAP! comix.
I can't get this pic to load. But maybe as a link? new and old Yes, that worked. I posted it at G-bodyForum but I can't get it to load on here. I never had the foresight to take a pic of my old bird and then set it up again as an old guy. This guy was smarter than me. Maybe he is on this site?
Here's a couple of mine taken at the same spot on vacation in 1973 and again during the 1st Cannonbird Run in 2011. The spot is in Rocky Mountain National Park.
I just noticed this clip while channel surfing. Bad Boys 2 has some classic cars. There is a really sharp '67 Firebird that gets all shot up. That hurt to see! 1967 Firebird gets all shot up
That's quite a wild scene. I had never seen that one before. There was a period that movie-makers were using that jerky, close-up filming style. It may just be me but I found those films difficult and even a bit stressful to watch.
It was moving so fast it took me a while to tell what year it was. Well, don't feel too bad. They build these cars just to get demolished. Judging by the exhaust note I would say it had a Chevy small block. They probably found a rust-bucket, plopped a crate motor in, slapped 500 pounds of Bondo all over it, gave it a quick shiny paint job, and it's good to go. Still, parts is parts and there went another parts car.
That is interesting. You can't see the 1968 directional/side marker lights. I thought the Pontiac emblem on the bumper nose was a '67 only item too. Or was it used in '68? If you take the driving pic and blow it up, you can almost see the PS vent latch through the windshield glass. I don't think they could airbrush it out because of the glass. Check it out.
