the 69 i have now that is aqua & black was built in the van nuys plant. the plant was in ohio my old 69 bird was built at norwalk. my understanding lordstown was the only plant firebirds was built at in 1967.
I just did mine today. I used the GM black/aqua trunk coating, which closely matched the original spatter left on the fuel hose shield in the trunk. It's solvent based so it won't wash off if damp.
In addition, I used Duplicolor Truck Bed liner as a base coat. This adds rust protection, scuff protection, noise dampening all in one.
post modification....Vikki asked me to do this:

Error in post. After paint cured, I found it still washed off when damp. Can you please modify this post with a note reflecting that upon further testing, this paint also fails?

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure. I feel like I am diagonally parked in a parallel universe. 1968 400 convertible (Scarlet) 1976 T/A - 455 LE (No Burt) 1976 T/A New baby, starting full restoration. 1968 350 - 4 speed 'vert - 400 clone (the Beast!) 1968 350 convertible - Wife's car now- 400 clone (Aleutian Blue) (Blue Angel) 2008 Durango - DD 2008 GXP - New one from NH is AWESOME! 2017 Durango Citadel - Modern is nice! HEMI is amazing! 1998 Silverado Z71 - Father-daughter project 1968 400 coupe - R/A clone (Blue Pearl) (sold) 1967 326 convertible - Sold 1980 T/A SE Bandit - Sold
Not for this car. '68 did not offer a power antenna option, so aftermarket is just fine. Plus when retracted it is just a button, and looks neat and clean. It's just test fitted, I will be triangulating the braces for stability when it's finished, and have to add a switch. I'll probably use a factory-type power top switch, since the car has a manual top it will blend in nicely.
My '69 has the factory power antenna and finding parts is a royal PITA.

WARNING: Even though the GM Restoration trunk spatter is solvent based, it will still wash off even when cured. Thumbs down on this product, I was hoping for better from Genuine GM Parts. Bjorn/moderators, can you please amend my post from yesterday so that no one thinks the paint is truly waterproof?

When I ordered my trunk splatter from Ames, what they sent was the GM Restoration product. I did not have enough, so I got the last can from a local Pontiac dealer. It was exactly the same.
Ames tells you in their catalog that it needs sealing.

So I'm claiming it) Old projects, gone but not forgotten: 1967 FB 400, original CA car. After 22 years of work, trashed by the guy who was supposed to paint it. I had to sell it. 1980 Turbo Trans Am 1970 Mustang fastback, 351C 4Bbl, auto 1988 Mustang GT, 5 speed 1983 F-150 4x4, built 302 1994 Chevy K2500 HD 4x4, 454 TBI
I made a sample shoot on cardboard, coated with the bedliner and the spatter just as the real thing. A little water made a murky puddle that wiped the color right off. The bedliner, of course, stayed intact.
I'll try sealing it and see if it's worthwhile, or if my $30 spatter job was a "wash".
At least my rear bumper installation came out well.

The trunk paint that is sold now requires a seal coat over top after cure. If I am correct, the idea of the bedliner first is right on point. Never thought of that and will use it come time. The seal coat is a mat finish clear that is water/solvent safe. I would think Krylon would be fine.
I shot the matte sealer coat on the test piece, and it did indeed "waterproof" it for normal purposes. So I shot the trunk as well, and it cured nicely to a durable looking finish.
I then read the can of the GM spatter, and it did not say that topcoating was necessary. So I shot some on the back side of my test piece (without bedliner) to see if the bedliner contributed to the solubility.
Nope, even directly on the substrate and fully dry, the spatter wipes off easily with water. Sealant is indeed necessary.

The Parts Place Inc out of Chicago sells what they claim to be the non water based trunk paint in Black & Gray or Black & Aqua: Their current eBay auction: http://tinyurl.com/244umn2 (end's in 6 days from 4/25/11)
We now have the correct formula trunk paint used by the OEM manufacturers when the cars were made. The paint is sold by the quart. There is more than enough to do several trunks floor and sides with this quart. Paint must be applied by a primer gun or one of the cheap Taiwan paint guns. You will NOT need to clear coat like most all other trunk splatter paints on the market. Lies out like the factory concours quality and comes complete with directions. This is a petroleum based product like no other on the market.
I hope to give this product a try on my trunk... maybe this summer? But I don't know anyone personally who has tried it yet...
I didnt use bedliner (its very heavy) , but painted with a good anti rust paint ,all black, then covered with grey spatter paint , 3 coats of clear....I also , used duct tape to cover up the open slots along the fenders (leaving open at top of fenders ,to breathe)as I found lots , and LOTS of junk down there before I repaired the rusted quarters...,butter knives, tools, old brake hoses, you name it ,was found there plus about 3 -4 cups of sand ,which retains moisture and rusts the quarters from the inside....I painted over this duct tape so its not much visible...yes, its "non original", but in my opinion an 'up grade', see pics
