I pulled my hood tach off looking for a code but I was not able to find one. I am going to send it off for repairs and starting looking at it real close. Then I cleaned off some silicon and pulled the cover off the tach.
I can not believe that the cover is held on by silicon. Any way I took some pictures thinking this may be a repro and since I've not seen one, I thought I would post some pics to see what you all thought.
I had an original that got "lost" on it's way to the box in the trunk of the car at a restoration shop in NY. I now have what is probably an overseas edition off the hood and in a box. I'll dig it out and send you pictures. It is for a 69 though.
PM your email because I can't figure out how to post pictures here.
Wow. Still looks like new. I will post picts of the one I have shortly.

How would I tell if it is a repop? Was the original base made out of plastic? This base is clear plastic painted. Was the original held together with silicon too?
I don't believe they made a single bulb repop? I think yours is an original but I forgot the year that they had the single bulb hood tachs.
The single bulb was on 67. I thought this was a repop because I do not see any numbers and it seems cheap made. How was the original case held on to the base? Was it siliconed?
Good luck fixing it. I see the dial is already stuck or stiff. Tried to fix mine years ago with little success. I finally found a NOS replacement part for the internals. It's the 67/68 Tall Type tach. Does anyone what to see internal pics of this tach?
There was a guy trying to sell (on eBay) his original tach that was fixed. The guy that fixed the tach just replaced the internal components with repro parts from a new tach. So he ended up with a tired looking tach with new internal parts for a cost greater than buying a new repop.

I had planned to get D&M Restoration http://dandmrestoration.com/ to replace the circuits and do a upgrade so that it will work with the HEI. The dial does move when you move the tach around. Maybe that get fixed with the upgrade.
So. anyone know how the covers are suppose to be held on to the base? what was the base of the tach made out of?
It's a repo of the original tall style, the silicone looks new. I do know that the GTO's were held together with 4 screws, not sure but the firebird probably was the same, check EBAY and search for hood tach's and I'm sure they'll have an original there.
I have the same one, it's also stopped working because I converted from points to electronic without properly wiring the tach in and they were manufactured for points only when I bought mine 20+ yrs back.
The original would have a GM part number on it and they had 2 bolts in the glass side and the sloped side was riveted to the hood, either with 2 rivets or one rivet. If they were ordered from the factory it was on the 400 sport option check your build sheet from the factory? They were installed as a dealer option too, again it would have a GM part number on it.

Thanks. It is on my build sheet but for some reason this just looked to cheap to be a factory tach.
I have the 400 HO option with a 4 sp and the tach was added as a option.
Maybe instead of repairing this, I should just replace with the new repop?

I have only used these guys and are extremely happy with their work. They were recommended by a picky Ferrari restorer.

The ones PY sells are supposedly the best. Have had many thumbs up here and on the PY forum.
Here are picts of the '67 tach I have. Looks just like yours. Except mine still works...
Mine is also siliconed closed. I have had this many, many years. So I know its not a repop. I am still debating if I should put it on my '68 or not. I've seen these nice ones go for $600-$800 on Epay. (crazy, I know)

Wow it is just like mine. Ours are different then Gus68's. If yours is not a repop then wonder why the differences between the two?
Also check The Parts Place. That's where I got mine based on recommendations from Performance Years.

Oh boy I would not sell it. Those are the pieces that you can never replace and the restoration cost is very low for originality. I still have my original that I replaced with a repop in 1992. I would never sell it.

Does your Have a part number on it somewhere?
For the repop I have unfortunately no. It is not exactly like the original on the bottom where it has screws but the top and the face look identical to the OE tach. Since I bought it so long ago I do not remember where I bought it and I do not have a receipt.
A guy I work with brought this tach into work for me to look at. The story was that his father in law worked for pontiac motors and took it out of the plant. Never used in the production bag. He took $100 for it, score!

I was wondering if your factory tach has a part number imprinted somewhere on it? I can't find one on mine.
