I've got a 67 convertible firebird that came to me with no inner fenders. I ordered a set from a local musclecar part supplier and he said that Camaro inner fenders are identical to Firebird inner fenders. I have been fighting with the driver's side for a few weeks now with no luck. The inner fender fits great on the outer fender, but the holes don't line up with the front mounting holes when trying to install them on the car. I havn't tried the passenger side yet.
Does anyone know if Camaro inner fenders are direct replacements for Firebird? All of my body panels line up great without the inner fenders installed, so I really don't want to mess with the radiator support or any other allignment of the front clip. I'm also trying to avoid chopping up a set of brand new inner fenders to get the holes to allign.
Any recommendations? Be gentle, this is my first post on this site and my first attempt at refurbishing a muscle car. Newbie in all respects.
No, the Camaro inner fender needs a little alteration to fit. They started making the firebird inner fender but I noticed some of the firebird suppliers have not switched their stock to them. I called firebird central and they still sell the Camaro but ames performance is stocking the firebird one. It is a 20 -30 higher.
You have no worries on this site. There is a wealth of knowledge on these cars at your finger tips for the asking- the people are great. I came in a couple of years ago and have learned by asking. (I still have a long way to go though) It is BY FAR the best site for help with your car. Information on both the purist restoration and the pro touring modifications is available here if you put the question out.
Welcome aboard.

As far as I know, the repop 'Maro fenders are identical except for the leading edge. That edge needs about 1" +/- trimmed off due to the different front bumper mounting on a 'Maro.
I used Dynamark inners on my coupe, and Goodmark on my '67 'vert, and both fit very well without any mods.
Maybe check to see what brand repops you recieved. May be cheap crap from China or Tiawan??

I have actually does this mod to a Camaro inner fender by using my old Firebird inner fender as a template.
There is a larger "notch" that has to be cut at the front inside edge to clear the Firebird's large "boomarang" bumper support where it bolts to the subframe. That mod does not alter how the inner fender mounts to either the front fender or the rest of the front clip structure.
In other words - you won't find you have a problem until you try and mount your front bumper assembly if you are using an unmodified Camaro inner fender.

They will work, you'll need to make some mods like Salmon38 said and Robert too, if you don't have the old inner wheel wells to use as a guide. I mounted it and had to make the cut for the boomerang, I cut straight out and then painted it and it looked OK, only cut off what was needed and a couple of holes will need to be made larger, every car is different though.
This is the only picture that I have. This is a Camaro inner fender for the drivers side. I made a tape template from and old inner fender and then put it on the new inner fender. I then cut it off with a cutoff wheel.
That picture speaks a thousand words because it makes it easy for me to be sure that my mind's eye picture is correct.
Are you able to install fasteners in all the mounting holes except for the ones covered by the tape? All I need is at least one of two words, yes or no.
If the answer is no, I cannot offer assistance because I haven't created the correct picture of your problem. And if someone doesn't understand what's going on, how the hell can they help when they haven't a clue what's going on?
If you choose to answer with no, and let it go at that, I have plenty of stuff to keep me busy--not as if I am seeking something to occupy time. If you say no and wish to try to explain the problem again, I cannot promise you that I can whip-up a solution, but I will say that I will listen to your description, something that is unheard of among the former air heads I worked with.
If say I am seeing exactly as it sits, I know what's wrong. The only thing I cannot provide is the skill set required to get it int position what's wrong.
If you do not see an instant response, it's because I have other thing to tend to, so it may a few days.
All excellent advice! You guys are great and I'm excited to get past this stalling point of my project. The picture showed what I was expecting. There was a large portion of the fender that was hitting the bumper mount keeping the holes from aligning. Since these are brand new fenders that I ordered from a local supplier, I’m going to try to get him to take them back and order me the right parts. I hate to start cutting on something that should have fit right the first time. If I don’t get any cooperation from him, then I guess it is on to the cutting wheel.
I know this is a very old thread. But this the only thread that comes up when I search. I can't search at all on this site for some reason. I need inner fenders for the '68 and I am pissed at the shipping rates. I can get Camaro units with free shipping. I know the only difference from the Camaro and Firebird units is the part that interferes with the bumper mounts. That is not a problem as I have a buddy with originals I can use to make templates and cut to fit. What I need to know is what is the best brand of repop sheetmetal? What I see these days are Goodmark, OER, Sherman, JEG'S, and Auto Metal Direct. Are any USA made? What fits the best? I don't expect them to fit like factory but I don't want to waste my time on total garbage either.
I've had luck with Goodmark, not inner fenders but floor sections. Original thickness and quality stampings. All the stuff is probably from China at this point.
" All the stuff is probably from China at this point." You know I did read that quite often, a lot of guys have that opinion. Then they just re-badge it for resale. If that is true then you might as well get the cheapest you can. I used OER for my rear footwells. I think it was from Taiwan. The metal around the perimeter was larger than needed but that was a good thing. They feel very solid. I went back and looked at Jeg's and I can get OER inners with free shipping. All the rest, the Firebird and other Camaro types [RS], you get banged with up to $178 each, plus oversize charge, for shipping. I don't mind trimming them to fit.
I used Goodmark and AMD inner fenders, made for Camaros. All you need to trim is a small slice about 1"×8" off the front edge. Otherwise they both fit quite well. Between the inner fenders and core supports, they all fit well. Front fender fit and shape are off quite a bit, rear full quarters are off a bit. And don't bother with rear skins, they are missing too much material. And I'm pretty sure all this stuff is made in PRC regardless of brand.

I went ahead and ordered the OER Camaro inner fenders from Jeg's. I got free shipping [WTF is with that? Same item as the Pontiac parts but they want a king's ransom to ship.] I have a friend with some rusty original 1968 inners that he will let me use to trace where to cut. Hopefully that is all I need to do to get these to fit.
The inner fenders came today. Boxed! I can't believe it they were in nice big boxes, wrapped with bubble wrap and stuffed with wadded paper. A first class packing job. I found a few dings but I can't blame the packaging, they must have happened at the plant or when readied for shipping. Nothing serious, I'll bang them right out. What I will say is why did I get this awesome deal for Camaro inners when the correct Firebird ones would have been three times as expensive? That does not compute. Next step is to drag them to my buddy's place and use his inners as a mold to cut these. FWIW these were from OER, via Jeg's, made in Taiwan, same as my floor pans, feel pretty decent, and if you look at the pic of the labels they say 'high quality' in parenthesis. So far so good.
As I recall I think I had to move several of the outside mounting holes that connect the inner fender to the outer fender in the wheel well above the tire. I just cut out the hole and moved it to where it needed to be and welded it back in. I remember welding one hole completely up and drilling a new one.
Robert it has been forever since I played with Firebird fenders. Are there nuts supposed to be welded in around the lip of the inner fender like the Camaro ones I have now? Or did they use those clip-on U-nuts? I seem to remember the clip-on ones for some reason. As I inspected the inners that exact thought struck me- are they in the right places? As you said, not a huge problem to move them where needed. Or, just drill holes and use the clip-on U-nuts like these.
