I filled up my tank on the outing before last and today when I backed the car out of the garage, the sloping driveway caused gas to leak out at the cap. This is a relatively new replacement gas cap.
So I went looking for another and could not find one even listed at Ames, CI or Ecker's Firebirds. PY has a number, PYR67, but no photo, no listing, no nothing. Nothing at NAPA's web site either.
I tried a search here in the Tech Section and it gave me fits.

I'm pretty sure the first 2 are wrong for a 67 as 67's are vented. NOS one looks too thick. I was in the hunt for one last year and lucked out when someone listed a 67 cap as a 70-73 TA. I was able to pick it up cheap. Far as I know no one is re-popping the correct 67 vented cap.

And the search goes on. The Parts Place has a '67 to '69 Firebird vented cap listed as part #FT2548F but no photo.
I bet you it has ears.

I have seen that listed as a Slant replacement. If you look carefully at the middle of the photo - I believe those are "ears" facing the photo head-on.

Yes, on the '67's and 68's the end of the fuel filler pipe is recessed inside the assembly (to make room for the filler door) so there is no space for those ears.
And it needs to be vented.
Non-vented with ears work on '69's only.
This is also one of those areas where Camaro parts are absolutely no good as all their caps are decorative like early Mustangs.

Thanks. I will check it out when I get home as E-bay is banned at work. Is there a Buy It Now price on it? If so - how much?
I am also trying to get an answer from PY about their exact replacement PYR67.

Finally found a work-around by looking that listing up on my phone.
That is the '69 style with the small nubs or "ears" on the sides that won't fit.
Here's a photo off the site here that shows the one that fits; the problem is that most of the caps without the ears are not vented:

Wow - I got locked out for awhile here because of "too many processes".
Here's a photo showing why a cap with "ears" will not fit:

Well, the potential for gas leaking out has put a fire under my efforts to get a replacement
So I bought one last night off of E-bay that the ad 1) claims it fits, 2) is labled "vented" and "anti surge" and 3) looks a heck of a lot like the one that PY has in their catalog. It is NOS but aftermarket (Not GM). My fingers are crosssed.
PY's tech section never got back to me about their reproduction.

bluebird, yours looks like mine with the exception of a check valve that is held in place by those two smaller tangs bent down over it??? says it's vented/anti-surge
From all the photos I have seen, vented caps say "VENTED" on either the face or the backsides.
Master Parts List says ALL '67 & '68's were vented - no exceptions.

Dr. Drive, You mean a check valve in the bottom of the cap missing from mine or do you see one in mine? I've never had any gas leak out other than what spilled/dripped when refueling. Can't see a tank vent and I have no return line. Nothing written anywhere on the cap, maybe it's from a Hudson or Vauxhall

Here is the cap on my '68. Looks just like Jim's to include the "Vented & the "F" & "E" letters on the "handle". Mine does not say "Anti-Surge".
I wish I knew why, but the site will not let me post the picture. It posted them the first time, but looked bad, so I retook the photo and tried to link again. It will not show up????
OK, the NOS aftermarket one I got from E-bay arrived today. It gave me a bit of a scare at first as I could not get it on.
Turns out the gasket face is spring loaded. As this cap has been sitting on shelves forever, that mechanism was a bit balky.
So I pressed down on the face of the cap with a wood dowel, heard a satisfying "pop" as the gasket released, and then the cap screwed on. After a couple of tries, I no longer needed the dowel and hand pressure was enough to release the spring. Very nice and snug compared to the one that leaked.
The previous incorrect unvented one is on the right.

68tpls400 pointed out that his AC-Delco/GM one on Page 4 was NOS. It looks exactly like the one I bought. I wonder what the part number is?

Here is a pict. This is NOS, but not necessarily 'correct' for fgf. My '67 had what Gus calls Type 1. And my red 400 'vert has its original, and is like Type II.

Just an update on the type II gas cap that gus68 posted.
I was looking through a 68 firebird sales brochure and one of the pictures showed the fuel door open and in the picture was the type II gas cap , just like gus68 posted and the one I purchased.
I'll take a picture of the page and post it. I don't have it with me but will get it tonight when I get home, if I remember.

What do other people have? I'm calling them "Type I" and "Type II". I'm not sure if Type I is even valid for Firebird but it does fit.
Seems a lot of parts catalogs show something different. Here is another where it shows 3931449 is a 69 cap.
They must have used different caps depending on what was on hand. The sale brochure shows one that looks identical to 3843698 and it fits perfect. Its hard to dispute when you see it on a sales model. I see a few other members in this thread has them as well.
My main purpose of the update was just to show that type II was used, that's all.
I have a few of the type II now. I'm good.

How much you want to spend on a 3931449? I may have found some. Wait'n on'm to get here to make sure they are correct.
That's an older catalog cause the price is 1.18 vs 3.49 in mine. GM replaced/updated their parts alot back then. If something newer fit older models, the old # was dropped. The 9794205 was RB 3931449 at sometime...
Should have a 3931449 tomorrow if anyone wants phone pics. Don't have the ability to upload on computer at this time.
Those interchange part numbers do not make sense. '69 caps have "ears" on them, and will absolutely NOT fit '67-'68 'birds.
Better check it out before spending $$ if looking for '67-'68.

Here is the photo I promised. Type II is shown here on this firebird ad.
Funny the type I is shown on the picture beside it which is a picture showing the fuel opening for all other models except the firebird and the station wagon.
Diameter should be the same as the one you have with the ears. Just measure across the area where the ears are not there. I was thinking about 1 5/8 but can't remember off the top of my head. I have one at home that I can measure if you want me to.

Hate to revive this thread, but what a royal PITA the gas caps are. I bought a 3843698 which is the original GM version and also bought a GT-53 which is a NOS AC-Delco version. I also bought a 10492 and a 10646. Findings: The 10646 and like gas caps will NOT fit 67-68 birds because of the ears on the outer dia. of the cap. Won't go on. The 10492 is a locking cap and will also not fit due to the outer dia. being too large. The 3843698 and GT-53 are basically the same and as shown on here in the "original" 68 ad, the only difference is the 98 cap and the "F" and "E" stampings on the face of the cap and the GT-53 has "AC" and "53" stamped. It looks like these 2 are the correct caps for the 67/68 Firebird, but I'm chasing a bit of a gas smell in my convertible. I traced it to the gas door. The seals on both caps are in tact, fiber seals, not rubber, but the fit is just lausy! There is so much slap in the cap (small dia. is 1.35, although the specs say 1.375) and the filler opening is way bigger, resulting the cap to twist on crooked. I've used a locking cap for the past 10+ years and it just pushes/snaps on, but would like to use the original cap. Anyone else find a better fitting cap?
Ram air, Read your private messages I sent one 3 days ago about the parts I bought from you. The "original with numbers" fan clutch you sent me is actually a no numbers used aftermarket piece I guess maybe you put the wrong one in the box. Also shipping in the same small box as the aluminum a/c evaporator did not work out as it bounced around and broke off the small tube and stoved in the corner at the seam. pm so we can straighten out. As far as the gas cap my sept. built 68 still has it's original "type 1" cap. having been in love with these cars since the 80"s working as a tech. at a Pontiac dealer I have seen the "loose" problem you are having before and may have some ideas/solutions. I could also take pics or measurements of my cap to help you out if needed.
