I picked up a 68 a few months ago and the previous owner swears the front seats are original. They are a high back design with headrests... I thought headrests weren't available till 69? Is he wrong or am I? Are there any part numbers on the seats that I could reference? Thanks, Steve
If correct ones, yes they came in '68. Like Gus says, very rare. You can confirm with PHS.

If they do have date codes I would be very interested too. Mine, like OHC, is an early build and it would be interesting to see if they installed the left over 68 seats in our 69s. I know my seatbelts are all date coded for 68s.
In my original instruction manual there is a drawing of a headrest in a 67 firebird, When I mounted the new seat cover there is an hole for a headrest. my car is a early 67.

I didn't know the 68 model even offered headrests.
I have at least three pictures of them on cars I've seen at shows and cruises. Can't verify that they are originals or not though. I would assume the ones on an excellent right-hand drive '68 probably are original but it is only a partial picture of the headrests.
I have never looked into it but we could check the internet for when the laws were coming effect for these things which would have forced them to start punching them out and offering them in the cars. Wouldn't that give some insight into when the headrests were there?
ETA: My car is a Oct 68 build and has headrests. Straight bar. They are listed on the build sheet as an option.
From what I've always always heard they offered headrest first in 68 but they were required by law to have head restraints installed for the 69 production year.
so are you guys saying that the headrest option was not available at all in 67? both my brothers 67 with black deluxe int and fold down rear seat and my 67 with gold deluxe int and fold down rear seat had headrests. I always just thought they were original but may be not? Neill
I believe they had them for 67 as well. VERY VERY rare as they were seen as safety accessory not mandatory so cost more $$. Made mandatory towards end of 68 production.
Fifty dollars back then was quite a bit of money (~400 today). While it seems like a bargain because it is a safety feature, attitudes were a lot different back then. I still recall back in the late 70s, the common response if someone in your car buckled up, "What, you don't trust me." Different world.
