68 firebird. Seller says the car was stolen back in the 70's and recovered. The Vin plate on the dash was removed. We talked to the Police department and DMV and they confirmed the license plate matches the car and the VIN on the title. The police and DMV said everything checks out okay with the car and they gave us the same story as the seller about the car and they confirmed the seller is the correct guy. We have proof of 17 years of ownership of this car with proof of insurance, Lien release, and title. DMV said we can get an inspection on the car which will fail and then we can get a blue tag with a new VIN issued to the car.
I heard of a partial VIN or maybe its a production date/number under the cowl cover on the firewall so I checked this out and it seems like its the last 8 or so numbers of the VIN. Problem is these numbers on the firewall do not match the VIN on the title. Is this supposed to match exactly or is that number on the firewall something different? It is very similar to the VIN on the title but not an exact match.
Is there any other place on the car where I can find a VIN besides the dash and firewall on a 68 firebird?
Thanks for the info. The engine and tranny are not original. 455 with a 4 speed Muncie. I've heard of a number being under or behind the blower motor but I have no idea where that is on the car. I read through that thread but didn't see any pictures and I couldn't find out exactly where to look at for the VIN that's under the blower motor. Does anyone have pictures or can anyone tell me exactly where I can find the VIN under the blower motor? I did find the one under the cowl cover.
You have to remove the fender and the heater box to get to that location. There is a hole in the firewall right behind the blower motor. It is right under it. I placed a yellow circle at the location. The 8 numbers stamped is suppose to match the last 8 numbers of your VIN. There have been mistakes where 1 sequence digit wrong but not series and it is not norm.
There have been people weld in parts to other cars that would make it wrong to.
Manual trans is stamped in the casing, like other components, sometimes you only see partial stamps.
