STANDARD BODY FEATURES

Space-Saver Spare

“Space-Saver Spare” Tire – Firebird. This unique 7.35 x 14 spare tire remains standard on all Firebirds for 1968. Mounted on its wheel in a deflated condition, this special spare tire increases the Firebird’s usable luggage space to approximately 3 cubic feet more than when a conventional spare tire

is used. Included with this spare, is a one-pound, can of compressed gas, which permits tire inflation at time of installation. After emergency use, the tire can be deflated, and it will collapse to its original “space-saving” configuration.

Fuel Tank Filler - Firebird

Fuel Tank Filler Location – Firebird. The filler pipe for the 18.5 gallon fuel tank is centrally located above the rear bumper for easy access. An anti-surge, vented fuel tank cap (same design as used on Pontiac station wagons) is used on all Firebirds. Exclusive “Firebird” emblem decorates the fuel filler door.

 Fuel Tank Filler

Fuel Tank Filler Location – All, except Firebird. The fuel filler opening for all models (except Station Wagons) is completely concealed behind a door at the center of the rear bumper. Not only is this location convenient, but it provides added protection against paint damage. The fuel filler door also serves as a license plate holder. The fuel filler location for Station Wagons is again located at the rear of the left rear fender.

 Trunk

Trunk Compartment – All, except Firebird. The spare tire in Catalina, Executive, Bonneville and Grand Prix is securely mounted at the forward center of the trunk to provide a generous amount of storage space. Tempest, Tempest Custom, Le Mans and GTO spare tires are again mounted flat on the right side of the trunk floor.
