Small Block Chevy in a 1968
Short answer: A small-block Chevy goes into a 1968 fairly easily (the Firebird shares its chassis with the Camaro). You’ll need:
- Camaro engine frame mounts plus the rubber/steel engine mounts (Classic Industries, NPD, Year One, etc.).
- Chevy accessory brackets for power steering, alternator, and A/C (if equipped).
- Throttle linkage: 1968–69 Firebirds used a cable, while Camaros and 1967 Firebirds used a rod — switch to the Camaro rod linkage (it uses the existing firewall holes), possibly with a Camaro or 1967 Firebird pedal, plus the correct throttle/kickdown brackets for your carb.
- Fuel line: the Firebird hard line crosses to the driver’s side; the Camaro line ends on the right — cut yours or fit the Camaro piece (cutting makes going back to a Pontiac engine harder).
Worth considering: a good reman or used Pontiac 400/428/455 is often available reasonably — many feel the car is “too cool to wear a bowtie.”
