I just got my 68 out on the road recently and I have run about 3 tank fulls of gas through it. It's an OHC6 1BBL and the calulated mileage was 22mpg the first time and 18mpg the second time.
I'm puzzled by two things:
1. It looks like the tank was replaced at some point...it looks like new. The fill tube is somewhat recessed from the plate that holds the rubber gasket. It takes a little work to get the gas cap off and it is impossible to pump fuel higher than the lowest setting on the pump trigger, without the fuel belching back out of the fill tube and spilling on the ground.
2. The second thing is that the original spec for tank capacity says 18.5 gal. I was below "E" when I filled up today and all that I could pump in was 12 gallons. The gas was right to the top of the fill tube.
The cap is vented and it does not look like the tank imploded, so that is what puzzles me. Does anyone else have issues like this? What is the correct position for the lip of the fill tube?
