My 69 vert also has the variable ratio 1-finger steering and is starting to have a lot of play in it.

The 'play' in the steering gear can be adjusted. If thats the problem. Check all the other linkage componants first, i.e. tie rod ends, pitman arm, idler arm and drag link for wear. Then check the gear, it should not be leaking from the pitman shaft or steering shaft. The adjustment procedure is in the Pontiac Service Manual.
