Here is what I did to find my original owner and dealer.
I did a title search at the DMV in the state that I had it registered in. About 10$. Gave them current title number and vin and previous title numbers and a copy of the title. Be careful, sometimes people get vin numbers transposed on titles, insurance cards, so be sure to send title number if you have it. They mailed back the records that they had. Repeated this process for three more states until I got back to the original title.
The original title had the manufacturers statement of origin with it which had the dealers name and zone and dealer codes.
Talked with the dealers son who remembered his dad selling car to his best friend in High School. He gave me the phone number of the original owner who was surprised and pleased to hear from me.
Call the state DMV and get instructions for this. Be sure to include return postage and addressed envelope. Be sure to get phone nuber of someone that you can talk to and be real nice to them. This process took several months.
