Not neccesarily. I've heard it said that you could possibly go as high as 10:1 with iron heads and higher yet with AL. It's second hand info. I can't verify by personal experience.
The general rule of thumb is 9.5 is the breakpoint for comfort. Evidently it all hinges on how well it's tuned.
