If it's not too much trouble, that would be great! As far as damage, I'm really not sure myself. I know that when we took my axles out there was quite a bit of slop in the bearings and the axles slid out pretty easily. From what I can gather, the bearings freeze up and the inner race rotates on the axle which creates the groove. The way I found out was to have a machine shop remove the collar and bearing, which revealed the groove/wear underneath.
The collar should be down tight on the bearing, so I do not think there will be much movement as far as rocking the bearing back and forth to see if there is a groove.
If there is anyone that can help us figure out what to look for as far as axle damage/grooves, please let us know. Again, thank you everyone for the help!
And an update on my project. I worked all day on the 'bird and got the entire undercarriage primered and painted with undercoating.
