The black ground wire does NOT travel rearward over the tank into the trunk. It goes forward and sideways to the passenger side bracket welded to the floorpan IN FRONT of the tank where the passenger side gas tank strap slides into.
There should be a small hole there and a small sheet metal screw. You fuel gauge will never read unless you connect this ground.
