The ground wire does not go up through the trunk. The ground wire attaches to a screw that is screwed into the floor pan (if I remember correctly) from under the car, not far from the front edge of the tank. All is all it really doesn't matter where you attach the ground wire as long as it is attached well so you are getting a true ground...
