I've never seen one cut open but I have heard that they have a cast iron weight inside of them which is suspended between springs above and below. The canister is filled with an ATF fluid. Holes in the weight allow it to move up and down with the fluid flowing through the holes dampening the movement.

I recently read that Corvair used them prior to the F-Bodies.
