I've searched "Starter Wiring" in the archives here and on CP and I'm getting mixed responses regarding the S and R terminals. Most are saying that the purple wire from the bulk head connector connects onto the S terminal. And the battery cable connects to the big stud on the starter. If you have HEI, the R terminal is not needed because it was previously used as the wire that supplies 12 volts to the coil during starting in points-type ignitions. It's kind of funny because the original 69 diagram linked above doesn't how the coil in points-type ignitions gets the 12Vs. It shows the blk/prpl wire from the bulk head connector as the resistance wire to the positive side of the coil AFTER starting and DURING regular running. I'm just curious but how does the coil (points-type) get it's full 12Vs when you try and start the car?
