Just take the car to the DMV and make them come out to verify the VIN.
Every time I have moved to a new state they require a clerk to come outside and verify the VIN's on all my vehicles when I register them for the 1st time.
Point out to them that you are going to have a major hassle if law inforcement pulls you over because the 2 do not match.
