OK, things aren't always as simple as they sound.
First neither one of the cylinders I have, have the hole for the paper clip method.
I disassembled the old column and found the slot to release the retainer clip, broke through the flash-over, but cannot seem to find the release clip. I can see into the back of the housing and can't see any kind of clip. I can see the rod coming out of the cylinder that turns the gear that pushes the rod to activate the switch.
What an I missing?
