I cannot say for sure, but the only installs I have seen required some butchering. Maybe someone else has seen or done an installation that wasn't a butcher job.
My 9's shifter is toast as to the option, but the 9's factory console shifter is supposed to be a slap-stick set-up. You hold it down in first, push to 2nd, and the detent is suposed to hold it in second, without entering "D." After you hit 2nd, you release the pressure, then bump it up in "D."
I'm assuming that all the nylon collars/bushings and the pletora of brakets are what make the slap-stick set-up work. Over a 2 year peroid with the shifter out of the car, I have spent a bezillion hours lubricating and studying the set up, trying to find out why it doesn't slap. I have an above average mechanical aptitude, but I'm at a total loss as to what interacts with what, and what's worn out.
If anyone knows the secret to the making the slap stick--I've seen one that--works, please share the secret because there are lots of 9 owners whose shifters are toast.
