I remember going through the same thing when I switched to a tilt column in my '69. The "new" column came with a Camaro switch that didn't match with the Firebird's wiring harness.I couldn't just swap the switches because there is a difference between tilt and non tilt units.One is a push to engage and the other is a pull to engage. IIRC the switch can be changed somehow to go either way but I can't remember how it is done. As with so many other things i've done to my car, I didn't take any pictures thinking nobody cares what I'm doing here in my garage. I realize this is probably not a whole lot of help.
