The trim has spikes that poke through the dash and are bent over the back to secure. The center splice trim snaps over the sides. I do not believe there are any seperate screws other than what I describe above.
As you said, not all '68's came with this trim.
I also don't think the trim fits OER dashes either. (from what I have read). You may be better off without it.
