I live in Charlotte, NC and purchased my 68 bird near Columbus, OH ...was going to trailer her back, but made a snap decision and drove it (that's only half the distance you were considering so you made the right call not knowing the car too well yet ...and all the rain in the area would have made it very tough on you) ...my trip worked out well and ended up being an experience I'll never forget ...loved every minute and got a thumbs up about every other vehicle that passed me ...nice to see people still appreciate an American classic ...anyway, I averaged about 14 mpg on beautiful sunny day in April ...picture perfect thru the mountains ...however, as much as I enjoyed it, not sure I'd do it again with a car I know nothing about. I did the first few hours around 45 mph and stopped about every hour or so to ease into the trip, and never went over 60 mph. My car had sat for a couple years so wanted to take it easy. I hope yours arrives safely and you get as much enjoyment out of it as all of us on this site do with ours!
