I have a tool that's more modern than Jimc's, it's only 20 y.o. And, to get more grip I fold up some course emery cloth and place it between the band and the filter. I run an ACDelco filter which unfortunately doesn't have the rubberized bottom.

In my case I have headers which makes the job even more difficult. I have to loosen the header in order to allow filter removal. No more headers for me, they're not worth the extra effort.
