I have installed a cd player in place of the original am radio. All I had to do was to cut the thin metal tabs out with a small metal saw. It took a couple minutes tops. I also made a template in order to make sure that I could put the mounting enclosure that came with the cd player inside the two small rectangular holes which I cut in the metal. Now I can easily access all buttons on the unit, mine didn't have any kind of plastic plate to mess with, but if you had one, I bet you might be able to remove it.
