180 degrees backwards must refer to having your timing mark set where the #1 piston is at TDC on the exhaust stroke. To set it right, you have to be at TDC on the compression stroke.
Another thing to check on your no spark problem: Is this newly restored engine grounded? Did you run a ground strap from the block to the chassis? Did you run one from the cylinder head to the firewall?
